Hiya,

Inspired by an item i read from a book, I recently bought an SLR camera to help me build up a librray of stock images. I have totally fallen in love with photography and have made it my goal to squeeze every bit of information out of this camera as possible.

I wondered if there are any professional or budding photographers on the forum, or maybe you've taken a few shots that you thought were quite special. I'd like to see what other people believe a good photo is.

Slap your photos of anything here, wehther it's abstract or textural so we can comment and share tips!

My current favorites from my recent series:

How did you even get close enough to take those Andrew, wouldn't they run away or something?
Or you have some inhumanly awesome zoom...

Alucard94:

Well my camera's has 12x zoom (not including digital zoom), so it's not all that great, but I was actually really close in both those shots.

The birds nest was actually within 3 feet of me or so, I could've jumped up and touched if I wanted. Obviously the bird couldn't have run away even if it wanted, considering it didn't know how to fly yet. With the squirrel I had actually been sitting in the same spot for like 20 minutes before moving closer, so I guess it got more comfortable with my presence and didn't run.

Benjamin:

Thanks.

It's a bit small, but my avatar was a picture I took, I'll see if I can find some larger pictures.

EDIT: Found some photos:

Here's where my avatar came from:

Some more lizards:

And my dog:

EDIT 2:

I'll try to find or take some more photos later.

Hope you don't mean literally, it'd be rather cruel. Nice photo though, big cats are beautiful animals, so I bet it was rewarding getting so close. (or having a decent zoom )

Nice photography from everyone else.

ALL THESE PHOTOS BELONG TO ME. NO THIEVING FOR PROFITMAKING THX!!!

i wish i'd managed to get the shot higher up so you could see more of the plane and less of the black fountain att he bottom, i wasnt thinking at the time.

this one was taken at the crack of dawn before my first ever sky dive. the fog was so intence the sun appeared as a tiny, very dim, ball. i took the without noticing the windsock and bench there, which really compliment the mood of the scene i think.

actionshot of the sport i love best. sadly im the only one with a camera hence you'll never find a photo of me jumping

railways station in paris, i forget which one. is either the Austerlitz, west or south station.

Fireworks, Fete De Bayonne 2007

Venice, 5am

Subtlety in Milan (i've only just noticed that blonde looking at the camera.. oops, was taking a photo of the macdonalds...) Btw, if you ever driven milan on Grid, this is the shopping centre you drive through by the cathedral.

Inconspicuous building in Sinuiju with hidden micro-brewery behind a door on the 2nd floor:

Beautiful waterfall in Rimyongsu:

Kim Jong-Il and all his little children at the Children's Palace in Samjiyon:

Bizarre lawn ornament at the Pegaebong Hotel

View atop Mount Paekdu (lake made from a crater--- the white line is actually stairs descending to the lake):

Traffic ladies at every intersection in Pyongyang

Ryugyong Hotel. Thousands of rooms, 7 revolving restaurant, crumbling concrete and unfinished (creepy):

Wide, 6-lane road virtually empty of cars. Yes, this is the capital city with about 2 million population:

Sorry for the double post!

Mayday Stadium--- the largest stadium in the world, with 150,000 seats. Sometimes they hold public executions here:

The DMZ, the border line between South and North Korea (you can see it in this photo--- not very wide at all). The South Koreans and Americans were taking our picture. Rumour is we all had sniper rifles on us at all times in case we should try to "defect" to the South:

Beautiful folk hotel in Kaesong:

Yonggwang Subway Station --- there was bad lighting in here and camera is crap. Beautiful design in here.

The Workers' Party of Korea monument outlining the three class types in their Juche brand of communism:

Okay I didn't take this one. A nice Mexican diplomat I befriended took it in front of Kim Il Sung's masoleum. The security was tighter than an airport's (complete with a windtunnel dandruf remover), so I couldn't have so much as a gum wrapper on me when I went in:

Chollima statue (my favourite statue):

Giant bronze statue of Kim Il Sung in Mansudae. You can see how large it is by the people in front. This site is holy for the North Koreans, and we weren't allowed to take crooked shots, shots where part of his body was cut off, shots of just his feet, or shots from behind. What they would do to us if we disobeyed--- well, I didn't want to find out

All you from France should recognize this Arch of Triumph--- but this one is in Pyongyang and it's slightly taller than France's (of course):

If you wanna learn about SLR cameras, my girlfriend setup a site while she was learning (she still in in what little spare time she has, hence the site being VERY quiet recently)...

http://www.kate-harris.co.uk/

There are a few posts there explaining things like shutter speed, aperture and ISO, etc.

Anywho - thought I'd share it with you

Yah man, only 2000 tourists go every year. It's a little difficult to get a Visa, but it's well worth it! Even with the bus crash and the food poisoning, I still want to go back.

LOL! For the statue picture, do they check it to make sure it follows all of their rules?

I urge you to watch the film "Who killed the electric car". Support electric cars! Did you know their used to be more electric cars then gassoline cars?

On the train out of the country to Beijing it took 5 hours for the border agents to check our photos. Some people had thousands of pictures and they had to show each one to an agent, who would instruct to delete if they wanted. After my bags and photos were checked I walked over to the unmarked building and visited the micro brewery. I have heard it is an illegal brewery, and I wasn't permitted to take photos of it--- but *dang* the beer was good! You should have seen the distillation process...

If anything North Koreans love their statues. These are *huge*

Quote: "Flood in Missouri this spring"

Yeah, there was flooding in Pyongyang when I went as well. You may have heard about it on the news--- bodies were washing up in South Korea. So sad This lamp pole should not be under the water:

We drove by an amusement park and the roller coaster literally was half-flooded. It was kinda scary as the bus kept having to turn around when the roads were flooded out. We saw many a peasant up to their waist in water.

Here's a better look at the Ryugyong Hotel, where you can see its epic scale. Such a waste:

Our 4-star hotel in the distance that was virtually empty. Only the lobby and our floor (36) had lights on. Every other floor was pitch dark, and the elevator tended to stop on these "ghost" floors randomly. At night you can look out of your window at the city and not see a SINGLE light. They shut off the power.

Quote: "@Jeku, what if you had a bunch of illegal pictures on a hidden memory card. Do they search you down good or what? It just seems so ridiculous to me :p"

They searched some people better than others. I was lucky and had an older soldier just look at a few pictures. In advance I swapped out the memory card for the card of pics I took in Beijing, and he didn't even see any of my North Korea pics. Other people had every single picture viewed. I managed to smuggle out their currency but that in itself was scary, as I witnessed several people get currency confiscated.

That's crazy! That's something to hang on to, eh?

The flooding out there was much worse than in Missouri. Where I was, that park was completely under, and I only knew of a few houses that went under. And I never heard whether or not anyone died. I highly doubt they did. It was just one day a STRONG rain.

Fantastic photos Jeku, what were you doing in North Korea? I had no idea they let people take any photos at all! I've always found soviet architecture fascinating and I can see a lot of that in the Korean buildings as well.

Sorry to post in an inactive thread like this, but I just got back from a vacation on which I visited South Manitou Island in Northern Michigan, and I've got some awesome pics.

This is a pretty shot of the beach with Lake Michigan in the background:

This one is a pic of the coast taken from a lighthouse:

This is a picture of the lighthouse:

And this is an inland lake on South Manitou:

I haven't really touched up any of them, so they could be better, but I think they're fine the way they are.
