So right now I'm on my parents' computer because my monitor is destroyed. I made a thread asking about it well it's non stop now and I can't see anything. The colors are so messed up I can literally see nothing. And to top that, my xbox 360 just broke. I'm getting 4 red rings. And yes, every cable is plugged in. I've done it several times, unplugging and plugging back in. I've waited over an hour and tried playing but still get the red rings. I'm not actually supposed to use this computer so pretty much my gaming life is at an end. And I'm completely out of money to get anything new. I spent what few hundred dollars I had on getting an xbox 360 because my first one got the red rings as well.

So I'm pretty pissed off right now.

Grab yourself a CRT monitor for peanuts until you can get a new one - I mean it actually costs money to get rid of these things so you'd be surprised how easy it is to get one.

It's not under warranty anymore. I only had a one year warranty and that expired a few weeks ago.

But I did just find out some great news. My sister is going to Italy sometime and she's getting some loan in two weeks. She said she'll loan me like $1000. I have a couple hundred in my bank so that might be enough to get a pretty good computer.

I don't actually know if it is the monitor that is broken though. It could be my video card. I just don't know. I don't want to go buy a new monitor and it not be the problem.

The place I bought my 360 from recommended I buy it used and because I bought it used I only got a one year warranty for it. I don't know why it worked like that but it did.

cover one up!

heh, I've heard so many problems about the 360's, I'm pretty glad I don't have one.

find someone who has a monitor... like your parents', and plug it in, see if it works. if it doesn't then you know you need a new video card. Or you could even plug your monitor into your parents' computer.

One thing that happened to me the other day was that Windows decided to install my EEE PC drivers onto my desktop - which it somehow managed. Consequently, any resolution over 800x480 caused the screen to shut off. Reinstalling the nVidia 6 series drivers helped. Hold F8 at boot, boot into VGA mode and see if it works.

My solution about the 360 problem, buy something better, a ps3.

When Chuck Norris goes to a gas station, he doesn't pay them $4.09 a gallon, they pay him $4.09 a gallon.

Well I've got this all figured out now.

My sister is loaning me $1000 in 2 weeks. I've been looking around on BestBuy.com and I found what I can do with it. I found a few very good computers packages (meaning monitor and computer) I can buy ranging from $600 - $800. I'm leaning towards in the $700 range. That also gives me enough to get a direct x10 compatible video card. And then turn around and buy FPSC x10 just because I always wanted it lol. Now for my xbox. My parents just said they will pay for half of it. Which is perfect because I have a few hundred in my savings which they said I can use (for the last time lol.)

Nah, I prefer my cars to break when I crash them rather than slide along the walls as though coated in crude oil and I also prefer my action games to be more than interactive cutscenes. Hence I play PC.

Not exactly a helpful comment, the guy's just had a couple of computer problems he's trying to fix that are a pain in the bum, sitting there saying 'PS3 is the solution' isn't helpful. It's not a console war here, if he wanted a PS3, he probably would have one. There's 100's of console war discussion and this isn't the place.

PS3s can break or stop working after your warrantee is over...

Yup, and it's cheaper to own a computer, than a computer and a console, though as a big Final Fantasy fan I've cursed myself, in order to play them all, I need every gaming gadget out other than the 360 or Wii. Or as I'm doing now, putting up with it - they'll be abandonware with decent emulators in 20 years time.

Thank you Seppuku.

To be honest, it's almost a good thing this happened lol. I'm getting a new computer out of it and if I have enough I might even pick me up a 360 elite lol.

Why not custom build from Newegg jenkins? You could pack much more into it because your cutting out the middle man (best buy) and you don't get a bunch of crapware pre installed on your computer too. If your not tech savvy best not try it though. You have to make sure all your parts will work nicely with each other first.

that's why you learn. There's plenty of people here who could show you what parts to get.

But if you're REALLY bad then you probably wouldn't want to.

It would be the best route to take if I wasn't as bad as I am. I'm horrible. I think an infant has a better chance at it then me lol. And my parents would be no help since technology wise, they're still in the '80s lol. I know some people around here would help but I just don't want to risk it. I feel much safer buying an already made computer.

I built my first computer when I was 15, with no help from my tech-illiterate parents. My uncle did help me pick out the parts to make sure they were compatible, but I did all the actual assembly. See, the parts tend to come with this paper thing with lots of words and pictures on it that tells you what to do. I think some people call it a manual.

Just don't cut off the tabs on the GPU to make it fit in the slot.

Do you really need a DX10 card AND a 360? I realise there are games for pc that are not released on 360 but if you only got one or the other you would at least have some money left over for paying back your sister, or incase this happened again.

Did you try plugging your parents' monitor in like JoelJ suggested? That may be the only problem.

I'm getting the feeling that this will turn into a console war thread.

But let me tell you a couple of things(Being a owner/ex-owner of all 3 consoles) I can say,

Playstation 3..
A good console but like many consoles it has its Flaws, the installation(most games are using back-installation now.Good) And also its controls are odd, not so much of the main interface of it but the Six-axis. The Six-axis had no purpose what so ever into the PS3 just a little perk to spruce up sales.

Xbox 360..
It has its flaws aswell like the red rings of terror, but these are somewhat rare events(Its not like you buy it and go oh no its red lights in one day). Also it's got a paid online feature, this is honestly not a big problem but to many owners who want FREE Xbox Live.

Wii..
A good little console but the whole idea of motion sensing, is good but can cause some confusions, take a game like Cooking Mama, sometimes you could accidently tilt the controller slightly and then it will do something else.

All I can say is resort to a simpler console, my favourites are..
The SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox 1. You don't need the best of graphics to enjoy gaming.

Does the store take even exchanges? Idk about where you live but in Missouri it's almost impossible to go to a store that doesn't take even exchanges. If you bring in an item that they have (you don't even have to have bought it there) and you just grab the new item and take it to the customer support counter, they ask for your receipt and you tell them you don't have it and they even exchange it. I bought a gamecube at gamestop one year and when it broke I took it up the street to Target and did that...they took it.

EDIT:I'm with you all the way Deathead...people worry too much about graphics rather then gameplay now days. In my personal opinion graphics are only about 20% of the game for me. I'm not saying that grahpics are nothing, it is nice to see games have shiny new graphics and all of that, but I'd rather have great gameplay and crappy graphics then the other way around. Look at the new Grand Theft Auto. It is rather fun, but it seems like they spent more time improving the graphics and the engine rather then the gameplay. San Andreas was HUGE compared to this game, you could do tons of stuff (San Andreas kept me occupied for months on end and I still play it just about every weekend) whereas GTA4 kept me occupied for say...3 weeks at most.

I was very tempted the other day to trade it in to gamestop for Unreal Tournament 3, but my brother told me he wanted to keep the game so I decided not too. Don't get me wrong GTA4 was fun...just not as fun as the series I remember.

Yes I need a DX10 card because I want FPSC X10. And yes I need a 360. My sister will be leaving for 6 months and she said I'll need to pay her back when she gets back, so I have 6 months to pay back $1000. Doing some math, that's pretty easy. I'm getting a job here soon and it won't be a problem to pay her back.

Quote: "Did you try plugging your parents' monitor in like JoelJ suggested? That may be the only problem."

If you understood my computer you would know why I'm not even going to bother. My computer has 32g hard drive. Yup that's it. 32 gigs. It has probably the worst video card on the market. And 1gig ram. The ram isn't too bad but everything else about this computer is horrible. It's 7 years old. It's outdated I need a new one.

I know the flaws, the pros, and the cons between all the consoles. But I don't give a flying f*** about the wii or ps3 lol. I only want the 360 because halo, gears of war, and fable.

Yes, please. Let's just leave it at, I like the 360 better. I don't want to get into arguments about it.

I have bigger problems at hand than people's opinion on which console is better.

There are still users here with worse computers, but 6/7 years is probably about as much as you can stretch a computer.

As for those trying to start a console war; It's all bloody opinions at the end of the day and people use what they use because it's good for them - a PS3 controller isn't going to do anybody any good if they prefer the 360 one, now is it? And vice versa.

I know what you mean and that's why people tend to not wait 7 years to upgrade, so in some ways I guess you're luck your comp screwed up. Plus FPSCX10 has given me the temptation too, though most of the game demos I've tried are slow, so probably a good feature to have default is 'configuration' my gaming laptop is new (replacing my 6/7 year old comp) so I can imagine the current market for FPSCX10 users is quite slim, unless people cut down on their high quality effects or the games have a config setting (or do they? If so I may have missed it)
