I would make a plain white hud, and make it fade out with the mushroom cloud and the expanding shockwave. That would make it look loads better.

It looks okay, I like the white thing, but you should use a decal for the explosion.

Nice start. You might want to try to use lights as well, and perhaps use scaling on the mushroom explosion.
