why is it that just because a game was made in say america, the age gate complies with american age laws, i hate going to a website and entering my age (which here in aus is legal to play games like Doom 3 andd FEAR) and being locked out, i know i can just go a delete my cookies but shouldnt they have a system that checks your location as well, for the people who dont know how to delete cookies

From what I understood from your post you get annoyed by the websites/games where you have to enter your age because of mature content?
If I understood correctly, then why don't you just fake your age and put that you were born 1909 or something.

I find it very annoying when sites have these age checks, but I can understand why they have them, however what I don't understand and really hate is when a website asks you every time you click on a video or something(/me throws a pile of poo at gametrailers).

Let's put it this way: a website is bound to the law of the location of its server. Basically, that comes down to when you visit a site in the US, you're under US law.

I totally agree with Rami, by law the website must present an age gate, it doesn't matter if the viewer of the site is in Australia, the UK, or Saudi Arabia. The law instructs the owner of the site, and not necessarily the viewer.

Although I really disagre with this rule. I feel that such an age gate should be decided upon by the owner of the website. But I'd rather see "mature content" warnings rather than age gates. After all, it should be someones right as a human to decide if they want to subject themselves to that type of content, but in many cases the government is making the decision.

An age gate is the same thing as the mature warning. However, the age gate allows the website owners to collect demographic data from naive visitors who will do whatever websites tell them to.

That and it locks out stupid users who don't know how to delete their cookies.

BUt as long as it's the websites choice to do that, I'm ok with it, a little annoyed, but I'll admit it's their right as the website owners. I just have a problem when the government steps in.

Am I the only one here who's wondering why anyone under 18 would input their real age or is that too obvious of a question...

You can thank lawyers for that.... not the government.

Not exactly, the site is bound to the law of its company, but you are still bound to your own law. The site has to comply to its country's laws, you do not. I'd go into more detail over this, but that would be unnecessary.

It's basically a test of whether or not you know to conceal your identity on the internet.

If someone knows to lie about their age, then they are less naive and less likely to be got by a paedophile.

i wasnt saying that i dont lie about my age on these things, but i posted because of the fact that if some is the legal age for such content in their area but not in the eyes of the gate and that person doesnt lie about their age and doesnt know how to delete cookies it seems a bit unfair
