I just recently got Vista and I'm pretty anxious to install it. Just waiting for my new hard drive so I can do all the dirty work at once. Well as many of you probably know Vista comes with 32 bit and 64 bit install disks.

What I want to know is your opinion about which I should install. How does DBP hold up in both of them along with other apps and games? As far as drivers go are there still big issues? Is a 64 bit OS worth the extra possible hassles?

Also, I plan to dual boot XP Pro and Vista Ultimate just in case I don't like Vista, heh heh. Should I use seperate hard drives, does it matter which OS I install first ( I thought I heard that somewhere... )

Any info will be appreciated. Please don't turn this into any sort of argument. We've all had our fun with those already, it's time to become mature about Vista as it is the future of PCs for awhile whether we like it or not =]

If you install the 64bit edition you will only be able to use drivers signed by Microsoft - so make sure there is decent 64bit Vista drivers for all your hardware first.

From my personal experience the 32bit version seems to be more stable. I had a faulty RAM chip a while ago, and on 64bit edition I was getting BSOD, files corrupting, and other weird stuff (services just failing). Whereas on the 32bit version the only problem I had was with the Nvidia driver.

Personally I would only go with the 64bit edition if your actually going to make use of it (i.e. use 4 gigs or more of RAM) as it's not like there's any software your likely to use that won't have a 32bit version.

I say go 64. Why? Because, the more people using it, the better support everything will get. If everyone sticks with 32 we'll be stuck with limited 64 support.

At least, that's what I think.

Only downside to x64 is that some setups will not work, as they are specificly made for x86 systems. However most of the time there is also an x64 setup available.

That's because a lot of older setup apps are 16 bit (which aren't supported at all by most 64 bit systems)

I've had zero problems on 64 bit vista. I recommend using that as long as you have a 64bit capable processor and mobo.

DBP works fine in both, as well as everything I've ever wanted to run.

Well, my PC is relatively new. I *think* everything that I have has 64 bit drivers but I may be wrong. Still have to research that a bit more. Thanks for the tips guys. I think what I am gonna do is install 64bit, try it out see how it all goes down with the compatibility and what-not. If I don't like it. I'll just whipe the drive and try 32 bit. My hard drive should be here in a day or so and I have Saturday - Monday and maybe Tuesday off for sure, so plenty of time to mess with stuff

Sweet! I'd agree about the 64-bit thing too. Use it and it'll become better, don't use it and it stays in the dark... Unfortunately, I don't have 64-bit (only 32-bit Home Premium), SO my opinion on that won't actually have any logical reason for me supporting it, but I do feel the more bits the OS knows how to use the better.

I'm sure you're definitely aware of this, but make sure your processor IS a 64-bit processor. I've heard (A while ago, from IanM actually) that some processors that just say "64" on them aren't actually 64-bit. Of course, mine is 64-bit (It supports what's called LONG MODE, which is [I believe] basically just PROTECTED MODE but allows 64-bit code execution).

No research actually done before posting, so keep that in mind.

Aaron, Vista tells you if it's 64bit capable.
Where you check the video game experience index thingy, click on the printable one, and it'll have a "64bit capable" value of "yes" or "no"

I'm aware, it doesn't say that before installing though. I have Vista, I'm well aware. In either case, that wasn't what I meant, what I meant was that I expected he knew his computer is 64-bit capable before getting the 64-bit version. And of course, I'm definitely certain he knows that, it was (an ill conceived) joke.

Well, with good enough hardware and good drivers, it will propobly work fine. Vista has its pros and cons, just like any other OS, the best idea is to test it yourself to see what you think .

Funny thing about Vista and crashes is that 30% of them are the fault of NVIDIA drivers. So Vista itself is very stable, but bad drivers can destroy the most stable system.

There is no greater virtue, then the ability to face oneself.

I couldn't even get simple programs to run on XP 64 ---- for example there wasn't even a 64-bit version of MSN that I could install.

That's xp, not vista. Vista doesn't suffer those problems.

Odd, the XP64 on the HP next to me has no problems. Even runs 16-bit software. It runs an AMD 64 processor, dual core.

ASUSTek Eee PC 701 4G Black - Celeron M @630mHz - 512Mb RAM - 32Mb Shared Intel GMA 900 - Windows XP Home SP1 - No antivirus/firewall.
And it still boots quicker than any other laptop I've seen.

So far so good. Been reinstalling everything. My sound card drivers seem a little unstable with a program or 2 but I'm updating those as we speak, so we'll see

Sound issues fixed... everythings working thus far. Some things are noticeably faster, no stability issues with anything with all the updates. Downloading Service Pack 1 right now... After that I'll be installing all my DBP plugins and tools
