Today the forum server was offline while we moved to a new box. The old one was fine but it was running extremely low on drive space, had no redundancy, and the CPU would struggle under high load. It served us well for over 2 years but we needed an upgrade.

The new server has much more capacity (we've now got 500GB free rather than 500MB!), it has 4x as much RAM (4GB), hardware RAID and a shiny new Intel Xeon Quad Core Harpertown E5405 2.0GHz.

In short, it will see us through another couple of years.

During the upgrade we took the time to move to PHP 5.2.6 (the old server ran PHP4) which means if you spot any weird errors, let me know. We also upgraded to the latest stable MySQL 5 release and are running a customised Apache 2 build, compiled to take advantage of the CPU we've got.

I have left debugging enabled in both the PHP and MySQL error messages, so if you get one please email it to me and let me know what caused it (if you can tell!). DON'T POST IT TO THE FORUM! The MySQL error messages especially often contain private data you don't want anyone else here getting, so please just email for now.

Update:

1) I've fixed the posting error (obviously!)
2) I've fixed the SQL error when updating your Profile

Cheers,

Rich

coffeegrunt - I have noticed this too, I'll look into it some more, the change in MySQL version caused it but I'm still trying to find out where.

You don't have to keep pretending Rich, it's common knowledge you run the forum from your laptop.

I'm guessing you spilt your tea on it.

Don't talk nonsense, you know he runs Apollo on an Atari 5200!

ASUSTek Eee PC 701 4G Black - Celeron M @630mHz - 512Mb RAM - 32Mb Shared Intel GMA 900 - Windows XP Home SP1 - No antivirus/firewall.
And it still boots quicker than any other laptop I've seen.

Sounds like a great new server there! Two important questions:

1. Can you run two instances of Pong on this new server?
2. Does it come in black?

1) Why would anyone want to run ONE instance of Pong, let alone two?
2) No, it's a gunmetal style grey

You mean the old server didn't lag because you tried to play an instance of Pong on it?

I hate Pong! I never liked it that much, and ever since the TGC Retro Compo that we ran years ago (in which I spent weeks playing every Pong variant going) I've had a real loathing for it

The Apollo forums run on the crushed dreams of MMOs. All tipped into a large meat grinder, operated by Higgins, who takes the weekend away from his cave of anger, hatred and alcohol. (Sorry Higgins)

Its good to see you still active in the Forum Rich.

Well this isn't really much of a forum error, but I noticed it's not possible to post comments or rate codebase entries... Nice server by the way File uploading is much faster.

EDIT: On a side note, screenshots posted in the screenshot gallery seem to be taking a while to be approved (more so than before)

Well I just happened to notice this today and it's really just an annoyance rather than a bug, probably not related at all to the server move, but I'll include it just in case. See this image image:

The highlighted thread's author and last post are the same person, but only the author has been updated to the user's new name, while the last post is still attributed to the user's old username. The thread is here if you're interested at all.

Trying to post my code to the DBPro Coding Challenge, I got this error in red above the Post Forum Message box:

Quote: "Unknown System Error. Sorry but I have to abort now. Please try again later"

This only happened when I tried to post 800 or so lines of code - it worked fine when I retried it with a short test message.

I got a "Game over man, game over" message when trying to post yesterday, and I had no clue absolutely why. When refreshing, it asked to resend the POST-data and that worked.

When I posted somewhere yesterday it took 3 attempts; the first two times it timed out after about 5 seconds.

I am getting "This thread is locked (or is an announcement), you cannot reply to it." on every thread.

To replicate it, try posting on a locked thread then go to a open thread and it still says the thread is locked. Once you post it goes away however.

I believe that bug has been around forever--- there's something similar when you accidentally post twice with the exact same comment, it gives an error saying duplicate post detected. But after that, everywhere you post the same error is written in red above the form

Ok another bug is some of the web addresses for people's sites at the bottom by profile have been changed to http://www.thegamecreators.com/www.theirsite.com

(just an example, go look at S4real's or others posts you might catch one.)

Hmm, I just experienced a bug. I made a thread over in Game Design about "Making a flawed character?" and it says there are two posts, but I'm the only one who's post is in the thread.

GOTCHA:error while posting
-----------------------------------------
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in C:\apollo\public_html\common.php on line 85
-----------------------------------------
BTW IF Richard Davey isnt sleeping for now, maybe he'll make 'make all as unread' button! Why not? Why was made 'mark all as read' only?

I too found some fatal errors, in some user accounts, 0 has been divided.
I know one user who has this, and there's plenty more
the user I found to have it was: http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_search
FPSCX10 LORD.

Now we all also know you cant divide zero can you?

Also, I found that if you post a link, highlight it, and then click image the forum ignores the image tags, but if you click image then paste the link in the little window it work just fine.

@ LT Tatters:
You can divide 0 all you want, but not divide by 0. Just felt the urge to point that out.

@ Richard Davey:
I've got a suggestion. It probably won't happen, but what about, instead of doing an HTTP Post to the server whenever you search, to instead do the little ? things in the url, like http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_search&search=somethingtosearch... Just a suggestion...
