LATEST DEMO ATTATCHED TO POST DATED 22 AUG. DEMO ALSO AVAILABLE ON MEDIAFIRE CLICK HERE!

Taking a break from making my other game. This is an asteroids clone, with the novelty of having a spherical play area, rather than a wrapping rectangle.

Stuff done:
basic mechanics and collisions using a gridding system
can shoot and destroy asteroids and reset game
game rate decoupled from sync rate
fake scrolling plain background starscape

Stuff still to do:
asteroid splitting
level objectives and scoring
level winning, losing
high score table, menus etc.

Thanks to Scraggle for the planet texture, and David Gervais for the asteroid.

Here's a pic and a video on youtube. After i've done a bit more i'll post a demo.

Looks really cool. I like the spherical play area alot, it's a great idea and looks like you've implemented it well.

That's pretty slick man. I love the idea behind it too.

Don't you just hate that Zotoaster guy?

Nice idea!
I'm glad you like the planet texture

I recently added some more planets to my website. Head on over to TheCodeBrewers.com to download them. I have also added normal maps for all of the planets, including all the old ones.

I like it! Quite nicely done ^^. I've always wanted to see a game that was based around a sphere like that, love seeing the bullets fly around it.

Thanks guys. Have made progress since, but have hit a stumbling block with set object/camera to object/camera orientation commands and instanced objects, but found a workaround!

Anyway, i'm concentrating on getting this thing working for now. When that's sorted i'll work more on the aesthetics if i feel like it. I'd like to play with the normal maps. Thanks Scraggle.

About the spherical idea- i can't really take credit. Although i've wanted to do the the sphere thing for as long as i can remember- played a lot of square wrapping games and invisible barriers games - a sphere seems purer and more symmetric - i was inspired to do this after seeing a video of Stardust for the PS3.

I've been pondering doing a 3d game on a 4d hypersphere, but I don't think that'll come to anything anytime soon.

Here's a demo. 2.5 Meg self extracting archive. Large asteroids split into 2 small ones. When all asteroids destroyed or player destroyed, level resets. Some other minor improvements.

Want to continue with this, but going to take a break for a bit. Maybe want to enter racing game code challenge.

Anyway, tell me what you think.

Thanks Tom.

I sort of finished it. There's still only one level, but menus and that are done. I've added:

Main menu
instructions
credits
high score table
screen ratio menu

volume adjust
pause

Demo attached!- ~2.5 Meg self extracting zip archive. What's your high score? Suggestions and stuff are more than welcome.

I like the way you programmed the shots to move around the horizon! That is very cool!

You should add different planets, each planet has a new type of asteriod, that is harder to destroy, or it will defend itself. And if you get to it, also add some aliens!

This is really coming on nicely! Good job

I liked the demo

I think you should make it so the user can upgrade his spaceship to make it easier to kill the asteroids and get money by completing the levels, the faster the player completes it the more cash the player gets.

Good work so far!
