Anyone used it yet?? There's some verrrry cool stuff on there. Many of the games really take advantage of the touchscreen and accelerometer in the iPod Touch/iPhone.

For those of you that have used it, what are your favorites so far?? I'm really liking Crash Kart and Dizzy Bee, as well as Super Monkey Ball, though the accelerometer's a bit sensitive with no option to adjust.

The Pocket Guitar app on the iPhone/iPod Touch is the only application I'm jealous of with my HTC Diamond.

@ tha_rami

The Pocket Guitar app I personally don't like because I play guitar, and it is nothing like it at all. I just find it awkward.

I used to have my iPhone jailbroken with the 1.14 firmware, and now that I have 2.0 (which I attempted jailbreaking) it's slower, and when jailbroken it loses the phone's signal. Aaaanddd downgrading is a pain, and never works right for me.

I am happier though, because texting is finally working 100% for me.

It's the only app that has something going for it that the Diamond does not have an alternative for.

Luckily, all the phone options on the Diamond work out of the box.

What is the Diamond? There's no way it has the sex appeal of an iPhone. Even John Carmack is getting in on the action by writing up an engine for the phone.

Sex appeal? Oh, actually, I think it's the sexiest mobile phone around. It appeals to the ladies massively, who like the diamondshaped back and the phone functionality, and the gadgets and gizmos in it definitely make up for the looks of the phone for the guys.

Slim, dark black, sharp VGA screen. Diamond and iPhone are full-blown concurrents and the HTC is winning specs-wise. The iPhone just sells better.

I'm a massive Apple fan, but the iPhone never did it for me.

The iPhone woulda done it for me if it could go verizon, I'm not switching my plan just for a phone. I don't feel like hacking it either.

Yup, although for the moment, the new 3G iPhone isn't unlockable with 2.0, but the old one is unlockable 2.0, but the iphone dev team will soon make the 3G iPhone unlockable.

And I don't run 2.0, I run 1.4 still, not going to upgrade until I get my new iPhone.

Running Windows, I can kind of see why it doesn't sell as well as the iPhone. Also, it isn't especially interesting looking. Looks the same as every other generic "smart" phone on the market

If I was going to spend the beans for something to run the 2.0 software I'd go for an iPod Touch over an iPhone. As it is though I'm skint so I'll have to wait patiently for my funds to increase, or sell a kidney.

Ya, I preferred the iPod Touch as well, mostly cause there's no way I'm using AT&T.

Well the only real benefit is that you can steal the hundreds of apps and games that you buy\download from the App Store. I dunno, I've never been that into stealing myself, so I didn't bother to jailbreak mine. The only benefit I've found is that you can get skins for various programs and themes for your homepage, but since they're releasing that on the App Store soon enough, I guess it doesn't matter.

Actually, I know 5 people who have a Diamond personally, and that's five people who bought it while I knew them before I told them about mine. I know two persons with an iPhone and one with an iPod touch. One of the iPhones is being swapped for a Diamond currently, as the iPhone disappointed the guy.

It's just the little i in front of the name that does it. Besides that, the Diamond can do what the iPhone can and in almost all cases, more.

The HTC Diamond Pro is a pocket PC with slidable keyboard. The HTC Diamond is a pocket PC with full touchscreen and finger-control.

Mind you, I also feel the Diamond looks better. Check the photos beneath, the third device is the X1.

Are you stupid? Sorry, but jailbreaking is NOT to pirate software, it is for people who create these great games (Mostly ports of other games and emulators that doesn't make it in the app store because of Apples idiotic rules) for example, the GB, GBA, NES, SNES, and VLC emulators are only on installer/Cydia and those are as always FREE to use. And there are SEVERAL apps that only are in Installer. Please do a little bit of research before you make assumptions, and the pirating side of things aren't really distributed through installers, they're mostly just Secure Shell'd in there.

Please, PLEASE, don't make such stupid assumptions.

EDIT: And for the record. The only reason why I use the iPhone and the iPod touch is because I will never, ever in my life run anything that runs Windows Mobile, in my honest opinion Windows mobile is ... well crap. And the second reason is because of the emulators (Yes there are emulators for other phones as well but they in general don't run as fast as on the iPhone OS) as I love having that on my phone.

Jeeeeez, calm down, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to get you all worked up. My friend showed me his jailbroken iPod Touch, and when I browsed through the installer, I found most of the apps and games that I had just spent a total of $30 on, for free. That gave me the idea that they were illegal copies. Once again I'm sorry that I got the wrong impression of jailbreaking. And, AFAIK, ROMs/Emulators don't make it into the App Store for a good reason; they're illegal in many countries.

No problem, if anything it's good that you've informed me about jailbreaking, I might consider jailbreaking mine now. One question though, if I jailbreak 2.0 will the app store and all my apps still be there??

Yep, nothing will change, you'll just have installer and/or Cydia on there, and if you don't know, Cydia is basically another installer application.

$200? And what is the average price of a basic phone without a contract? Umm, about $200. For the price, nothing beats an iPhone. And as far as people complaining about being stuck with ATT, just don't use the phone. It's hardly the first phone to be exclusively on only 1 provider, nobody just ever cared for the others so there were no complaints.

You have to include a 2 or 3 year contract and data plan into that equation.

I'll just use my D600 for another two years... Something that does texts (touch screen = eww), videos (is it true the iPhone is no good?) and calls (very loud, good as I am half-deaf) perfectly, is comfortable to use (none of this touch sensitive garbage) and is absolutely indestructible. (No glass here.)

The HTC phones cost about £390 here in the UK. I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than pay that much for a average looking phone that runs Windows.
Also, they don't work with all network providers (at least, here in the UK).

(Obviously the iPhone is network restricted also, but the fact an unlocked simless HTC phone can't use some networks isn't especially great)

Quote: "absolutely indestructible. (No glass here.)"

If you're talking about a Samsung d600, I would very much rethink the indestructible comment. It may not use a touch screen or glass, but it is a slide phone

Yes, and slide phones are very, very tough. I'm certainly yet to see one break. Flip phones, sure, they have a tiny point of contact. Sliders, on the other hand, are very tough. Ever taken one apart? The slider mechanism is always very, very strong and is the hardest bit to disassemble. It's usually constructed out of aluminium, and has a huge area of contact with plenty of thick surrounding plastic. So if you honestly think that is weaker than a huge glass sheet, I certainly hope for the sake of the end user you never get involved in engineering.

And besides the iPhones screen is pretty tough. And there are really no reason to argue this at all, again, it's all about what you as a person feel is better, not what everyone else does

Can't really say I dislike Windows mobile. It's definitely better than the mobile Mac OS that's currently out.

So you've managed to buy a new phone and activate it with a new plan without signing a contract? I'd like to know who you go through.

2 year contract at $70/mo = $1680. That includes 450 day minutes and unlimited data transfer over 3G. Whats a plan cost for the Diamond? I also can't seem to find anyone who sells the Diamond and only found rumors of the price which range from an impressive $100 to an incredibly retarded price of $800.

iPhone
- ($200)
- 8GB Storage
- 2.0 MP camera
- GPS
- 3.5" Display
- Talk Time: 5hr/3G - 10hr/Edge

Diamond
- ($100 - $855)
- 4GB Storage
- 3.2 MP camera
- GPS
- 2.8" Display
- Talk Time: 4.5hr/WCDMA - 5.5hr/GSM

Diamond is smaller with a better camera and nearly has the same battery life as an iPhone, but it only has have the storage and a smaller screen with no multi-touch. I still think the iPhone looks way better and though I haven't used a Diamond, I seriously doubt it's easier to use than an iPhone. Plus, hate the iPhone all you want but you can't neglect the amount of support it's building with the app store.

Nex, what do you have against touch screens?

They're not nice to type on. Still good, but nothing beats mechanical buttons. With T9 enabled, I don't doubt I'm far quicker on my little numeric pad than most are on their touch screens. Also, each menu object has a key combo meaning I can reach anything I use often in under a second. For instance:
5-2-1: Messages
9-6-1: Bluetooth On/Off
3-7: Calculator
9-5-3: Backlight
Touch panels are nice for showing off, but in real usage nothing is better than real buttons.

Diamond: Stylus, handwriting recognition, graffiti mode, two cameras (front and back), programmable hardkeys, Windows Mobile (+relevant applications as the Sprite series), HSDPA, HSUPA, GPS, GPRS, 3G, TouchFlo 3D interface (which can be disabled and replaced by other UI's, if you wish), 4 hardkeys, approachsensitive multidirectional scrolling pad, acceleration sensor and far smaller. Plus, the backcover doesn't melt in your pocket nor does it develop tiny cracks over time.

The iPhone isn't bad by any means, but seeing the Diamond is slightly cheaper - at least in the Netherlands (491 euro for an iPhone (simlock-free) and 489 for a Diamond (simlock-free)) - I know which one I prefer and the only reason to go for the iPhone the larger memory bay or multitouch (and it has the Apple logo (L)!), while there are numerous reasons to go for the Diamond. They even figured a way to not need multitouch by allowing gestures like drawing a circle around what you want to zoom in on. Multitouch while on a bike is difficult enough.

Still, it sucks for those who bought the iPhone that the zirconium in the backcover of the iPhone turned out to be such a mistake. While I am a honest Apple fan, I think they lost this round. The Diamond is said to be iPhone killer #1, followed by the TouchWiz 3.

I agree there. I know at least six people now who have a Diamond and all of them are more than happy with it. These people are random people, heck, I met one in the cinema yesterday. The lack of a stylus for both opponents of the Diamond hurts badly in my eyes.

Corrections Bergice. It's Tap Tap Revenge and iPhysics there's a difference.

EDIT: Oh and TTR is nothing like guitar hero, it's made to mimic DDR in the sense that, the beats don't always just follow the guitar part of the song.

The whole idea of having to use a stylus for anything is just a terrible idea.

I haven't heard of anyone having issues with their iPhone backs cracking or melting. As for typing speed, I could never type very fast on a phone anyone but I think apple has T9 or something like it.

As for your key combos, no app requires me to do more than 1 tap on the screen, that beats your 3 character combo shortcuts.

Drawing a circle with a stylus is better? However, I hope nobody with either phone is doing that stuff while driving.

Hmm we'll just wait and see. Several MP3 players came out before and after the iPod and the iPod just walks all over them, with an inferior product even. I'm not up on cell phones, so I've never heard of the Diamond, but I just can't see anything coming close to conquering the iPhone because of all the software being written for it already. Software drives hardware, not the other way around. Even if you don't jailbreak your phone you have access to hundreds of nifty programs and games--- just the other day I found the Lonely Planet Mandarin guide for free on there, with dialogue and handy phrases. Not for everybody, but still it's helpful.

Funny you should mention--- I sit with a bunch of artists at work and they *all* have iPhones or are planning on getting them because it just came out in Canada last month. One of the girls took out a stylus and it didn't even work on the iPhone. Mysterious

The iPod is a great MP3 player than beats nearly every available MP3 player around.

The iPhone, however, has problems due to the zirconium casing and the total lack of a stylus/graffiti is appalling for such a large phone. Then to mention one guy already suffered minor burn wounds because he fell asleep with the iPhone in his pocket is a big no-no for me. Like in the Apple Store, there are thousands of interesting WM6 applications floating on the web, including Mandarin as well, lol.

How, exactly, is the iPod great in comparison though? It's just something that I've never been able to extract from a user - there's so many cheaper, better devices on the market that it's hard to fathom how exactly it is "better". And I believe the same of the iPhone; it's a fanboy thing.

ASUSTek Eee PC 701 4G Black - Celeron M @630mHz - 512Mb RAM - 32Mb Shared Intel GMA 900 - Windows XP Home SP1 - No antivirus/firewall.
And it still boots quicker than any other laptop I've seen.

The new iPhones have a different casing and the reason I heard for the switch was due to signal strength. 3G required a stronger reception which was partially being hindered by the zirconium back. I googled for temperature issues on the phone and found a few mentions from people on forums and blogs, but mine's never felt warmer than room temperature.

The iPhone is more powerful than the Diamond in terms of their processors, plus iPhone supports OGL as they demonstrated Spore on it. However, I think one if its biggest downfalls is the lack of Java support (which Diamond has). A video camera would be nice, but I bought a real camera for that rather than rely on a phone for pictures/video. Flash wasn't supported because of the power consumption required. I feel Apple should have supported Flash but left an option to disable it.

Here's a simple comparison chart:

@Nex,

There are mp3 players with more storage and cheaper, but it comes down to the interface. In my experience, Apple has consistently provided the better UI.

Well, that chart pretty much nails it. A missing spec was the processor: the iPhone indeed has a 620Mhz processor while the Diamond is stuck with a slower 530Mhz one. Nice to see some honest reviews, there are quite a lot 'biased' comparisons out there. Spore on the iPhone is not the same Spore as on PC, is it now - it looks like a custom iPhone app, pretty much like Warcraft II or Quake running on Windows Mobile.

In terms of cost, I would say other cheaper devices definitely offer good capacity for price vs. the iPod.

For example, I bought a cheap Chinese player with 20GB a while back, and it was fairly good. It sucked UI wise, and the fact it was a very specific vendor (poor software compatibility)

I think that's where the iPod wins. The user interface, and the fact that (assuming the competitor isn't just a giant USB stick style mp3 player) it is a very well recognised piece of hardware - there are tons of pieces of software that allow synching with it

No kidding--- I assume it's similar to the DS version, which is a glorified Creature Creator.
