Hrm...
I tend to ramble a lot, I appologise!
BEST GAME - BioShock:
If ever there was a game to prove that games are an art form, this is it. Probably the most emersive and original game universe I've ever seen, in terms of design, sound, art and concept. The combination of FPS and RPG elements wors realy well, the characters have depth and the voice acting is excellent, it draws you in completely. The graphics are stunning, they hired a whole team just to do the water alone. I don't think I've ever anticipated a game as much as I'm anticipating it's sequel! (And the film!)
Plus, this game harbours a very serious educational message: Don't take drugs, kids.
Then again, at the same time it also harbours the message: Drugs give you super powers...
MOST INGINUITIVE - Portal:
Practically re-wrote the puzzle gaming genre. Wonderfully engaging on a mental level whilst still hillariously funny. Took puzzle games from the bargain bin to the fore.
Oh, and in case any of you needed proof that I was a nerd, I am writing a screenplay for a film based on Portal called 'Aperture' for my film studies class...
BEST MULTIPLAYER - Team Fortress 2:
Probably the most addicting game I've ever played. The simplest concept executed with sheer brilliance, well worth the 8 or so year wait since Team Fortress 1. The combination of the cartoony art style and the glorious, gratuitous violence along with the hillarious personalities of the player classes all add up to potentially the best online multiplayer experience I've had in a long time.
There is nothing more gratifying than shooting another player, and then not only to see them explode, but to see their various limbs and internal organs all labeled for you amongst the remains. And they say gaming encourages violence?
BEST RPG - Assassin's Creed:
I've only had this less than a week and I'm allready in love. I don't quite know if this counts as an RPG, but I couldnt think of another genre to assign it to, feel free to correct me. I've played a lot of free roaming games but this one certainly has the greatest feel of 'freedome' to it. The free running works brilliantly (Though it took a while to get used to controlling it with a keyboard and mouse!) and the world seems really explorable.
The fighting, I'll admit seems a little repetetive sometimes, but the sheer fun you can get jumping from rooftop to rooftop and diving into carts of hay certainly makes up for it! I've never been a fan of fantasy, knights and horses and castles. But this game has opened my eyes to realising that horses can be as cool as 'hover-jey-laser-mobiles'and that stabbing people can be just as fun as shooting them! But seriously, I draw the line at World of Warcraft.
MOST UNDERATED - Kane & Lynch: Dead Men:
I personally LOVE this game. Great fun, good replayability, satisfactory level of expletives. Yet the reviews didn't seem to care for it and after barely being out a year, I find it for £12.99 in my local game store's 'Bargain Bin'. Not impressed.
It's not the best graphics or the most original, but it's damned good fun to play!
Apparently there's a film on the way...
WORST GAME - Supreme Commander:
Biggest. Dissapointment. EVER. Honestly, I've played more exciting games lawn bowls with my Nan than this! (Seriously, I play lawn bowls.)
Thank god I only payed £15 for it in a pack with 'Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance'. onestly, was SO looking forward to getting this, all the advanced features, 'the most detailed and expansive RTS of all time.'. The truth is, the detail and the features RUINED it. It's just too complex, so complex it saps all the fun out of it! Spending hours linking structures and setting waypoints and building technology trees. This game also wins the award for 'the shortest playtime before uninstallation ever'. Installed it, played it for 1 day, left it there for 2 weeks untouched and then uninstalled it to make space for Guitar Hero III. I've never even looked at 'Forged Alliance'.
Other games worth noting:
Alone in the Dark
Command and Conquer 3
TimeShift
F.E.A.R.
Games I plan on buying soon:
Unreal Tournament 3
Games I can't wait to be released:
BioShock 2
Mirror's Edge
Spore
STALKER: Clear Skies
Crysis: Warhead
Fallout 3
Red Alert 3
Battlefield: Heroes
