To change the motherboard of a Dell XPS?
I fear that if I change the motherboard, my recovery disk won't work anymore.
I think Dell "locks" the motherboard in the bulding stage, so if you try to use the recovery disk on any other system without a Dell motherboard, it will produce an error in the installation stage.
Also, does Dell offer a hardware upgrade service? If so, does your computer needs to be still under warranty?

You are right, Dell locks the motherboard, even making direct changes to the other hardware such as the video card impossible sometimes. I hate it, haha.

Google for ways to unlock it. I mean there must be a way to unlock something that is lockable.

My guess would be a custom bios chip.

then replacing the motherboard wouldn't be a problem, right?
unless all the other hardware doesn't work without the presence of this specific bios

If your motherboard is red in color then it using the 7 strikes system and need the engineer's disk to reset it.

had this problem when the engineer come out swapped the motherboard but did not do the up date, so when I tried to do a fresh re build with the recovery disk it was no go. Had to call the engineer out again to fix it again.

it needs that magic disk?
