I know I just bought a new computer last year, but the graphics card I bought wasn't exactly top of the line when I bought it; and since GTA4 is coming to the PC this November, I was thinking it might be wise to move on up in the world.

Here's the thread I posted when I built my computer.

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=111959&b=2

Right now I have an XFX GeForce 7950GT 512MB, and was thinking of ordering the EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130318#spec).

It's only 130 bucks after mail in rebate, and I was wondering if I would get any noticeable improvement with it, and enough to justify buying it.

opinions?

Goodness grief; to think I am yet to use a computer with a card above a 7200. And that's too expensive for me.

(AGP high-end cards are expensive, as is a new motherboard and everything that fits it)

ASUSTek Eee PC 701 4G Black - Celeron M @630mHz - 512Mb RAM - 32Mb Shared Intel GMA 900 - Windows XP Home SP1 - No antivirus/firewall.
And it still boots quicker than any other laptop I've seen.

Not another computer upgrade thread.

I have the same card as you (only it's BFG), and it's pretty good for most things, just not the high end stuff. How much are you willing to spend, and how often?

A 7300 costs £30, and a 7600 costs £40 or so. Far from expensive

The 8800gt is pretty good actually. It'll run Crysis on higher settings. Not ultra high, but still very well.

I suspect it'll run GTA4 exceptionally well. The gta series has always been tight and ran well, so hopefully it'll do the same here.

I'd buy it. You might wanna check ebay too, since the 9xxx series is out, you might get a cheaper 8800gt.

Hurray for teh logd!

The only 7600s I can find for under £50 are out of stock permanently. £50 is a lot when the equivalent PCI-E is little over £20.

I'm a bit cautious when buying expensive things on eBay, I know someone who bought an iPod Nano and it turned out to be fake, and the PSP I bought off ebay stopped working after a couple days, I'd rather pay a little more and be sure. Besides, the shipping is really decent off Newegg, it's like 6 bucks for 3 day shipping.

Edit: Just realized it was FREE 3 day shipping...

EDIT 2: Can someone also verify for me that this card will indeed run on XP, and supports DX9?

I'm running a 9800 GX2 and goes pretty well with XP and DirectX9,
my guess would be that card will also run fine on xp.
I originally bought 2 8800Gt for SLI, out of fear that a 9800 gx2 wouldn't run well on my system since it's PCI-e 1.0a.
My PSU didn't support the power requirements for the 2 cards, so I took the plunge, traded it and payed the difference for a 9800 GX2.
I used the 8800 for a weekend, and all my DX9 games ran pretty well.
Got to say it's a pretty good video card, go ahead and buy it.

Thanks for clarifying that.

If anyone knows of a better card for around the same price, please tell me.

Hehehe, I still hate judge judy but thats funny.

If you want your computer to play a game that isn't out yet, wait until you buy the game. Then, if it doesn't run smoothly, buy a newer card which will likely be even cheaper than it is now.

You can kinda pirate cards, you can download bios and inject them overwriting your original one, making it better. But that's dangerous, SO DON'T DO IT!
