Yes, Microsoft have a free version of Visual Studio 2008, called Express Edition.

I would say that it is the best free thing on the internet, maybe second to Wikipedia.

I disagree! *speeds away*

Why should information have value, though?
Some information does, of course, but I'm talking about general facts. Like who wrote that book? What year was uncle Hitler born? etc. That should always be free. I expect nothing less from any information source.

Youtube is a nice free thing. You can get your message out to the world, find educational videos, watch trailers, listen to music and make a fool out of yourself for no dime at all.

Grandma,

I think Wikipedia is a pretty revolutionary idea, so a lot of people would probably try and make money from it.. of course, I don't know if anyone would use it if you charged them to use it.

I heard there would be ads there in the near future, but that's probably as far as it will go. If it goes further than that, I think people will start using other services. That's the way of the internets.

You'll find a lot of people here have a great sense of humour. Whether or not I am included is debatable.
I have a style of my own and is just a bit more "out there" and inappropriate, so I'm always noticed for that.

The problem with Wikipedia is that, though a great source of information, it can be inaccurate or even false (rumours or errors on the poster's behalf), good idea but I wouldn't hold what is said to be biblical - which is the good thing about the references at the bottom - if you need to double check anything - check the references.

To the OP - Visual Basic 2008 express is your best start and Microsoft's website has a series of tutorials, so you'd pretty much get started from just Microsoft's website, though for something specific chances are you'll find a tutorial through google easily.

In theory it can be false, but in practice can you give me a significant example?

I love Visual Basic. Highly recommended the 2008 express version. Although alot of people still stick with the 0.6 one, which is sometimes easier for smaller apps, take the Flatlanders fpi editpad for example was programmed in Vb 6.

Borat is the President of Kazakhstan and Elton John is gay are two obvious ones I've come across.

As for actual 'non-stupid' errors - I've not come across any in research, simply because our University forbids using Wikipedia as a reference - thus I haven't, though I did use it to check the resources at the bottom - for example articles on the Runic alphabet on Wikipedia links to a set of websites dedicated to the topic.

But I haven't relied on anything specifically on Wikipedia, so I don't have an example. But still always good to make sure what you're reading is completely accurate, especially if you're using it in an essay or something like that - hence people note references to websites, books and other media (so you can check it yourself)

The latter is true, what are you talking about?

I should elaborate - it was on completely random page, we were doing research in sixth form and on one of them was just plastered with 'Elton John is gay', I'm sure it was removed, but it shows that it's easy for people to put what they want in and there are people that do.

I think he's actually bisexual.

Where did I learn that?

His Wikipedia page.

Where? I see this:

Quote: "John married German recording engineer Renate Blauel on Valentine's Day, 1984, in Sydney, but they divorced four years later. John later renounced his bisexuality and came out as being gay instead."

But enough talk about Elton John's sexuality and the inaccuracy of Wikipedia.

Well alright - take everything from Wikipedia to be true without checking the sources provided and run the risk of your source being inaccurate.

Don't get me wrong, Wikipedia is an awesome site for finding info - but I live comfortably (especially when researching) to check any sources - like the Rune one, which turn out Wikipedia is right because I checked the sources left at the bottom of the page and of course I could use the two website 'Ancient Texts.com' and 'Omniglot' as reliable resources (as our university doesn't like having Wikipedia web references as it runs the risk of inaccuracies)
