Hi. i was wondering what ways there are to texture a 3D model (such as a gun)?

ive heard of unwrapping the model into a 2D image and then you open it up in an image editor and "draw" the texture on. is there a good free program that will allow me to do that? or is there other ways to texture a model?

EDIT:found a UV mapper program.

-thanks for the help
