For a while now ive been using the basic dark basic stencil shadows and i would now like to move up to using shaders for shadowing. The only thing thats holding me back is that in my initial tests evolved s shadow mapping shader you can find off his site will not show up as anything but black. I attribute this to the fact that the second texture stage requests a normal map and i assume that is the detail map on an advanced terrain thus making them conflict. If anyone has any ideas on how i can make this work that be great!

I don't think you understand my problem. I am well aware of how to do normal mapping but as i said above i wish to just have shadow mapping on the advanced terrain but my hypothesis to why it doe sent work was that normal maps go on stage 2 of that specific shader where i believe the detail maps on AT'S go. The reason I posted here so early in the problem is that i believe i have talked to GG a few times about the advanced terrain structure about a year ago. And from what i remember it has some nuisances such as normal data and such that are different then normal objects but again im not sure and i don't want to waste my time when i know there is at least someone on these boards that knows more about advanced terrains and shaders than i do and can at least put me on the right path to solving this problem. Which I am now beginning to believe is going to need a modification of the shader but im not positive on what i need to change or if i have to change anything at all cause of the nature of advanced terrains.again im sorry if i wasent clear before and hope that someone could help me solve this problem. If you need more information or anything let me know and i can supply code and whatnot although its a straight port of the evolveds demo code applied to an advanced terrain. Thanks!

A good place to start would be:

Shaders for Advanced Terrain

You might find some of your questions answered - if not, put a post there pointing to this and I'll try to pick it up later. I think your problem can probably be resolved quite easily - but no time to check in detail just now.
