hi all, I'm having real problems with Windows SP3.

We went through the automatic install down in the taskbar, followed the instructions and then clicked restart when it asked us to. Now the laptop is hung on a boot up screen (which is not the normal one I should add, although I dont know if that is some new SP3 feature). The screen has the windows logo and 'please wait...' displayed none of the text is flashing or moving in any other way.

Could someone please tell me whats going on?
Is has been like this for a good many hours, should it normally take that long?
If it has gone wrong somewhere, is it safe to turn it of and on again? If we do this, will the laptop still be on the good old SP2 and will all the files be ok?
Has anybody else had the same/similar problems with it?

I'm sorry the description is not very detailed I wasnt there untill I found out that it was stuck on the 'please wait' screen

thankyou for your time.
Regards
RichMan

Is the disk-usage light flashing at all? If not, it may be best to turn it off and try starting up.

it flickers occasionally, but there is no change, will there be any damage to windows XP or any of the files if I turn it off and on again?
usually I would have done it by now but because it is updating the operating system its made me a bit more cautious.

If it's really been hours and it's not a crap computer, I don't think there's anything else that you can do. But, if it's a really slow computer, you might wait it out a little longer.

I installed it the day after it was released. The install went perfectly on a 128 MB RAM computer.

well, SP3 is working fine with me. but here's some suggestions:
first, remove the battery from the mother board. for 5 minutes.
second, read the motherboard manual to find the jumper that should reset the CMOS or BIOS setup.
third, remove the hard disk and install it on another computer as Slave. and do a scan to see if there are any errors.
i'm sure im getting you all confused. if you can't do it, let some IT guy do it for ya.
if it works, go immidiatly to Safe Mode and uninstall the SP3.

hope i helped.

Surprisingly my desktop had trouble with SP3 installation, it gets until pretty much the end and then says "SP3 installation failed" and then it uninstalls itself and restarts. The computer works fine though afterward. I don't know what the deal is!
