Hello.
I used to love computer games when I was younger, but because of all the "recycling" in the games industry (15,000 FPS's all the same, some other 1000 crappy Strategy Games in which the only good strategy is rushing, and tons of RPG's in which the gameplay is not as important as the story, and viceversa) got me in a state in which a game wouldn't entertain me for more than 3 hours.
That's changed since Spore came out. It's simply on the best games I've ever played.
Yeah, the game might bne categorized too "simplistic", but the truth is the game in itself is very complex. In this game, you can set your own goals, which are only ruled by your imaginations limit. That in itself, suggests quite a gameplay exprience, different from any other.
The game is so flexible that you can achieve different goals in so many different ways. It lets you be creative with the solutions you can provide, and one of the coolest things, it lets you be creative in a straegic way.
The game is so well designed, that if you get in a state in which it seems impossible to get get through, there's always a way to get out of the deepest hole.
I consider that superb game design, and something I've been craving for quite some time.

I've been quite disappointed by the games gross oversimplification of every aspect of the game. Although it is a good game, it is very superficially done in many aspects, and stands as another example of a game so proud of one innovation or feature that it disregards basic standards for good gameplay and fun in a game, which seems to be a trend recently.

But the fact that they put so much into a single game still makes it pretty awesome, right? I haven't tried the game yet because I'm still technically on vacation. Wednesday I'll pick it up.

Umm, I just got the game, and while I'm only at the very end of the creature stage, this is one of the coolest games I've ever played. Yes, it's simpler so far than the typical rpg (though more advanced than any in character building), but the stage in question is also shorter. I feel like a creature trying to survive, and it works really well, I think. When I first saw the epic creatures, I freaked out, and even more when I saw one I made. Then seeing UFOs and everything was very cool. I've made dragon-centaur like creatures, and It's great to run around and fly. I can't see anything particularly lacking in this stage, accept the ability to be a water faring species. Pretty much, this is what I was expecting and hoping for so far, and I really like it. Then again, I'm playing on hard mode. I've been hearing about the oversimplification, and hard mode might be off setting that.

Also, Spore has more than one innovation... + 5 modes of gameplay. Did you expect each to be as complex as another of it's type? I don't really expect an advanced game until the space stage. To me it seems like each stage is just part of the overall game, not a single game in itself. This also makes for a nice shift in activities, all the while guiding your creatures down the path of evolution. I don't know, so far the game seems extremely well put together. At least in hard mode, I don't think I'd want to handle much more than what I already have to. The lack of story frankly makes sense. I'm a creature trying to survive. Open ended game. The combat system works pretty well, so far numbers are more important than any amount of strength, and the combat has already started moving towards group fights, and I can see this moving into the tribal stage nicely.

Really, I was expecting something much less interesting from the reviews. This is what I imagined up till now, the whole surviving thing taking up all my time, leaving little to explore, until I become strong enough. Well it didn't take long to become that strong, and soon I was romping around with some other dragon centaurs beating the c##p out of creatures that had once terrorised me. It only felt like a short while, but looking at the history of my species, I had done a lot. I was also impressed that not only did my creatures adapt to being 4 limbed to cenaurish, but also took full advantage of their flying, and as they got smarter seemed to venture farther from the nest alone, and prefer to soar through the skys than walk, just as I did.

Am I missing something, because from what I can see Spore has lived up to all the hype is spat out. I don't recall the will wright saying the stages would be as advanced as other games of the type, in fact he has described each stage outside the space stage as a simplified version of another game in that category. Spore is about the creations, user generated content, and a game anyone can play and enjoy. I do consider myself a hardcore gamers, but I also like that I can enjoy the vast complexity of spore without too much micro management.

I'll give more impressions once I get to the other stages, but so far so good.

But the complexity has been dropped to keep the fun there. An in-depth civ. phase would have been cool, for instance, but I reckon it would have detracted from the overall fun of taking over enemy cities (The AI was pretty smart even on easy mode actually, which impressed me)

i am worried about the whole securom deal. I bought the game but i am afraid to install it. I heard that simple hardware ugrades and driver updates take away one installation and you can only do it three times. Considering that i have windows and as much as i love the OS i can expect it to crash any moment. Once my PC had to be reinstalled two times in 4 days, (remember in the beginning of the summer when my registry was raped?)

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

heh, I was gonna point that out, the the game prolly won't be played by a lot of people after the first wipe, because people will want to save their activations.

EA, you suck balls.

Thankfully, I'm sure they'll release a patch shortly because all their customers will rightfully complain and complain.

You know you owe me a bottle of Coca Cola now, don't you?

I told you so. I said it was going to be a disappointment, and I also said I wouldn't like it. To cut it short: I didn't. It was a fun approach to gaming and I don't regret trying it for the pure technical innovation in the game, but like it? No.

Heck, I have a nice creature going at the moment - still not highly impressed - I'm seriously tempted to go back to Mount & Blades, butI have this inbuilt urge to finish all the games I start. I'd rather rush through Spore for now. As soon as I hit space-stage, I'll post my final conclusion.

Sorry about the bump!!

I would comment on SPORE if I had received from PLAY.COM yet, which I ordered on 5th, and hasn't arrived yet, it is the 3rd item I haven't received from them It looks great, but I won't be playing campaign much, probably just sandbox modeor something .

I think most people that don't like the game is because this game is a more "contemplative" experience, in a world in which "action" is the rule.
Sometimes, in strategy games, specially the ones that require extensive building, the action starts too early to be able to appreciate the complex artwork and general design of the game.
I think the experience you get from spore is more oriented towards the excitement of being able to "grow", both physically and spiritually, your own creations.
Part of that excitement also comes from the realization that you're not alone in the galaxy, which adds a nice dimension to the overall state of mind, of which feelings play a nice part.

Well, I'm in space stage, and so far I really like the game. I was kind of annoyed at space stage because it was so much harder (I'm on hard, and frankly wouldn't consider playing on easy), but I got the hang of it and it's a very rewarding and fun experience. If I have any complaints about the game, it's these:

-I wish the game still let you develop an underwater culture. It's not a big deal really, but I would have found that very fun. From a development standpoint, I completely get why it wasn't added though.

-Civilization mode doesn't prepare you for space stage the way the other modes did. While it still transitions nicely and has introduced the main concepts of space stage, it plays much more like a board game than space stage. Granted I had plenty of fun in it, I just wasn't prepared for Space stage.

-And finally, THERE IS ONLY ONE SAVE PER GAME. This means in space stage you have to really plan out where to save lest you start an interstellar war you can't win and are stuck that way. I learned to deal with the saving at tribal stage, but really this is my biggest complaint about the game.

So, aside from those three complaints, this is so far one of my favorite games ever.

Well not me! I'm enjoying the game at least as much as I thought I would, which actually surprised me because I didn't think the game could live up to my expectations for the first four stages. I did expect simple gameplay from the those stages, but I didn't realize that I would enjoy them so much. I see no flaws in the gameplay, it's just simplified. I think the systems were actually quite clever, and things like the city building stay with you in space stage. I'm very attached to my creatures, which is one of the big things about the game, making everything the way you want to.

Recent additions to my best games I've played list:
-Spore
-Shadow of the Colossus
-Elite Beat Agents
