I have two monitors connected to an 8600gts. When I connect a different size monitor to my Apple, no problem. But in Windows? forget about it. No separate desktops, maximize a window and it stretches across both. Isn't there a way I can have a different resolution for each monitor?

If you have an Nvidia card it comes with a utility for just that sort of thing.

The problem is you're trying to mirror the desktop on both monitors. Don't. Turn off that option, you'll then find you can adjust the resolution on each monitor independently.

its not mirroring the desktop, but spreading it across both monitors. Which is sort of what I want, but I want the resolution to be independent on each monitor. I've tried setting resolutions (after switching to advanced mode) in both custom and normal, but custom resolutions won't save and it won't allow me to change the 2nd monitor at all.

Well. What kind of graphics card do you have?

Working fine here on my Intel GMA 900. Got my MSN windows on the laptop, internet on the big screen. Laptop: 800x480, Big Screen: 1280x1024. If I drag a window into either display (they can span both if I want) and maximise it, it will only fill that display.

I've also set it up so that the laptop screen is positioned to the bottom of the big screen, as it is physically. Works really intuitively. Screenshots well too.

I had it working with two different sized monitors on two different resolutions using Window XP. I've never tried it on any other system.

This is definitely the wrong attitude to have about it.

Windows it great for multiple displays with an NVIDIA card. You just have to install the official drivers.
