if I don't sync off and do a call to sync myself, it loads the object correctly.....strange....
Using Patch 4.1

Any ideas?

It does not work cos your code is all wrong!

first of all you don't use sync off you need to change it to sync on,
you also should not turn backdrop off when loading spheres and stuff you only do this when you have a sky box, and you need

do
sync
loop

at the end of your code!

and i dunno why you are setting camera range, positioning and rotating camera you really do not need theese commands for just loading a sphere.

hope that helps
