I'd advise Milkshape 3D. It's only $20 (last time I checked) and can export in import a lot of formats. You can download a 30-day trial here http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/ms3d/download.html and if you like it you can buy it.
There are also some free ones like Wings3D http://www.wings3d.com and Anim8or http://www.anim8or.com, and you can find the link to 3D Canvas 6 on this forum.

med.exe is not free standalone!

how come i have modeled with it alone?
just download the A4 or A5 demo and keep med.exe, that doesn t expire like the program demos

i haven't really used it that much (love the conitec level editor though) so can it save as any useful file formats?
