I'll be purchasing a new computer soon and I want to make sure that a 24 inch iMac with these specs dual booting Vista will run FPSCX10. Has anyone had any problems running it on the Apple hardware?

3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/512MB GDDR3

Hmmm, never tried a true dual boot.
Since your card is compatible, it should work.
Not sure about sound. Worth a shot since you've got
Vista installed. But I hope you really have a PC in
case it doesn't work!

@rakker Have you tried it? What part of the system leads you to believe that it won't work.

@uthinkg No, I don't have a PC. PC World said that Macs are the best for running Vista and I use OSC mostly anyway.

I've got a Mac 20. I've had video and audio issues with running PC games. I didn't really look into resolving them since I also have 5 computers and 3 laptops.

But there is no way that I would invest any money in PC software to run on a Mac. In fact, nearly everything I run on my Mac is open source. All Microsoft has to do is release a patch that breaks Mac compatibility and you'll be up all night trying to undo that patch. It would be fitting since Apple seems to love to break non-approved apps on the iPhone!

I would love to run FPSC on a Mac. But the only advantage would be if I could run it in a window next to a Mac app. I would use Mac apps for modeling and textures. And since you can't do that, I'll just stick to all game development on the PC. I use Final Cut on the Mac for video editing of cutscenes.

I wish I could afford Final Cut

You can do it windows with your texturing programs running. It's called Parallels, it lets you run Windows and OSX at the same time. All the good graphics tools are designed for Mac anyway, that would be an added benefit to do both at the same time.

Does anyone here use a Mac?

If you are looking to do 3d art and game making i would reconsider getting a mac. Most of the budget 3d programs and game making tools are made for pc. I use a mac as well but do not run any windows programs on it, I use my dell for that. My mac is pretty old though and I use it for garageband and imovie mostly these days.

Don't get me wrong, I love macs, I think its a superb operating system. But the developers for cool and cheap software for 3d is on pc.

Just my opinion,

Parallels, VMWare, etc. won't help with direct x10 graphics. That's where my Mac breaks down.

@dennisb
There is a larger variety on the PC. And the software is definitely cheaper. But PC's are a whole lot buggier. My main reason for using a Mac was the interface/ease-of-use, and a more stable OS. There's nothing worse than a PC locking up after 3 hours of rendering.

I think the main reason people went with PCs was because they're cheap. Now that Apple has switched to Intel, pricing is much more comparable. With Open Source you can get a lot of the same software that the PC has. Having said that, there is no real gaming market on the Mac. You're definitely better off developing games for the PC, and doing it on the PC. Unless you are developing for the iPhone. That will be a growing market for a while.

Yeah uthink, its a pity about the gaming market being dominated by pc. Mac is a superior operating system. I take good care of my pc and it rarely gets buggy on me, but the mac never gets buggy on me.

So the consensus is that even with Windows Vista and a DirectX 10 gfx card, the Mac hardware will cause problems with FPSCX10? What about the original FPSC? Would that work? Those NVIDIA GeForce 8800 graphics cards have DX9 support too.

I don't think anyone knows for sure.
I was just saying that I wouldn't spend the money without knowing for sure. So buy X10 to use one your PC, and "try" it out on your Mac. But if you only have a Mac, it would be like playing roulette with $70.00

I notice the demo is currently down. If I remember correctly that was only a FSPC demo, is there going to be a FPSC X10 demo? If the demo works, then the real version should work.

Are you talking about a video or downloading a demo version of the program? The video is on the fpscreatorx10.com website.

There are no trials for the X10 version of FPSC yet.

Mac isn't even an operating system, and if you mean OSX, then no, it's not.

I'm not talking about the Mac OSX. I'm talking about running Windows Vista on the Mac hardware. I was going to ask in the regular FPSC Mac thread, but it got locked. Have anyone tried running the DirectX9 FPSC on the Apple hardware with Windows XP? I could get Windows XP. I've heard Mac's DirectX 9 support isn't as good as DirectX 10 though.
