Just got this in my mail. Do you really believe any of it?

7 reasons the world will end in 2012

Scientific experts from around the world are genuinely predicting
that five years from now, all life on Earth could well finish.
Some are saying it'll be humans that set it off. Others believe
that a natural phenomenon will be the cause.

1. Mayan Calendar

The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans,a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things:
Building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone
and Sacrificing Virgins.
Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate
the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out.
The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012.
Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.

2. Sun Storms

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made
a startling discovery: our sun is in a bit of strife.
The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012

3. The Atom Smasher

Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator.

Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place.

They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes.
So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

4. The Bible says...

If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn't bad enough,
religious folks are getting in on the act aswell. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good an Evil,
has been set down for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

5. Super Volcano

Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser.
The reason for this is simple - it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano, and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats.
The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion
that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun
and plunging the Earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years.
The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily,
and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

6. The Physicists

This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics.

Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers.
and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse,

they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon
- while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent-
and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

7. Slip-Slop-Slap-BANG!

We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so -
and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue.

Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner.

While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds,
killing everything it touches.

Do I believe it will happen? Not really. I have a theory that the Mayans who made the calendar simply realized (First Mayan dude)"Hey, guys, umm....why are we making this calendar when none of us here is going to live to..uhh...what year are we on? 2012? Yeah. None of us in this room is going to live to that date, it's thousands of years away. Let's just let future civilizations figure it out for themselves! I'm off to lunch."
Second Mayan dude "I second that motion! Chuck, stop right where you are. I think we should go on a strike and eat!"
Chuck "Uhhh.....OK. Shouldn't I at least make it to Christmas?"
Second Mayan dude "You don't even know what Christmas is!!"

So you see, they simply realized it was useless. As to the other theories, the only one I agree with is the Bible one about Armageddon, but the fact that it pinpoints 2012 can't be agreed with because the Bible clearly states that no man will know the day or the hour.
That's its exact words.

And the pole shift? WHAT?!?!?
Who sent you this email, mamaji4? Just out of curiosity.

Bullsh!t. I am a Christian and we believe no such thing. I don\\\'t know of any extreme, radical christian group who does either. Who the hell made that claim? I would like to speak to them.

Dont wanna start a religious debate because its agaisnt AUP but yea I'm a christian and the bible infact states that no one will know when the end of the world will be except God himself...not even Jesus (the son of god) will know until the time comes.

Again apologies but i just had to get that said or I was gonna explode

cheers

The email appears to be a summary of an awful TV show that ran in the US on the History Channel no less. LOL.

1) Most mayan scholars consider this idea of a 2012 cataclysm to be a misinterpretation of the calender, especially considering that this cycle happens around every 4000 years, as we know, humans have been around for many cycles of 4000 years, infact by 2012 there will have been 13 "cataclysms" since the mayan calender started, and we're still here. Furthermore, the mayan calender schedules events to come for a long time after 2012.

2) the sun has 11 yr long cycles, and while it's due to go a little crazy between 2011 and 2013 (the northern/southern lights being visible from the equator for example), no time in the history of man has this cycle caused our extinction. sure you should expect your pc and other electrics to play up, but only as they did last time the sun peaked its cycle.

3) from what i gather, its all entirely speculation, we dont know what will happen.

4) this is a fabrication, none of the abrahamic religions give a clue as to the date of the apocalypse, though there are warning signs to look out for to show its coming.

my personal opinion has always been however that it's been some time now since anything "biblical" has happened. sure there are some religions which believe in recent prophets, but im not a follower of one of them, so their beliefs arent mine. From what I understand, the Jews are expecting a messiah to be the next event, while I'm not too sure what the christians are expecting, Muslims believe that there will be no more prophets, the only next thing on the agenda is Armageddon which will be marked by the return of Jesus, and the last prophet was around one and a half thousand years ago, given Jesus was around just half a millennia before, you'd have though something was due to happen soon, but then there was (from what i understand) a 1300 year gap between Moses and Jesus.

So from a religeous perspective, the end of the world happening in my lifetime woudlnt surprise me, but at the same time, whats to say it wont wait another few centuries or millennia?

5 + 6) Bah, volcanoes, asteroids, earthquakes, all sorts of planetary disasters. maybe, something could happen, but as with the religious argument: if something is overdue, then what's to say it wont remain overdue for even longer? we've lived through such events in the past, and we have better technology for survival than we ever have done, im not totally convinced, especially about the whole mathematical proof thing, sounds like rubbish if you ask me.

7) true but again, the whole "its overdue so is bound to happen soon" doesnt convince me. From what i remember, we've survived 2 ice ages in the past, ice ages caused by the poles switching, so next time the poles switch, sure, expect another ice age, but if we survived them before, then why should we worry about another (and clearly the deadly UV levels idea is bollox)?

We've had this EXACT thread before lol. Your 7 reasons are even the 7 exact 7 reasons I quoted in the other thread.

But anyways... no, this isn't going to happen.

Yeah. Spam is all pervasive. I generally don't open these sort of forwarded mails, but just out of curiosity. Actually I too believe its a lot of humbug. Fixing the date. Man, they can't even tell us when the Dow-Jones Industrial Average is going to recover.

Yah, we've had like 2 or 3 of these threads within the past month or so. Please discuss this there if you really want.
