I ad-hoc networked my EEE PC which only ever crashed when I overclocked it to 4gHz for fun and whilst trying to find it in Finder I came across this:

Very funny, Apple. Although it never actually did that.

Yeh there was a bit of hubbub about this when Leopard was first released. I can see the funny side of it but I also think it's not the most professional decision the Apple design bods have ever made. It's the kind of little dig at windows that could make Apple seem just that little bit too up themselves. It's nice to see them so open in their windows bashing but at the same time completely unnecessary. Unless that icon is representing what happens to a Windows PC running iTunes

I've been running itunes on windows since it was first released and never had it crash. Oh, i see you're talking about the most recent version. I haven't heard it cause problems on anything other than Vista. Regardless, I'd still blame apple for the BSOD on that one.

I love the reflection they put up there to make the BSOD look stylish.
And it's sort of a fact that Apple is full of themselves, I do like their products (I'm on one right now) but they are sort of arrogant some times. Although they do have a sense of humor.

OSes should BSOD. BSODs provide important information to developers as to what went wrong. If the system just stopped because iTunes wrote to 0xFFFFFF or whatever, well, frankly, who would that help?

The system wouldn't stop if something like that happened, it would throw up a security exception dialog box and be done with it. A BSOD means something has gone wrong inside the OS itself, like a driver or anything that runs in kernel space.

Nice porn server, I mean prnsvr. Apples constant bashing of Windows is starting to annoy me. Why cant they advertise the Mac based on its strengths, not the supposed weaknesses of other platforms?

Because they're Apple. To be honest, they're one of the most Fascist-esque computer companies out there (along with EA and Dell ); though it is sort of funny.

Because the Mac has no strengths from my month's experience so far. ^^

It's often so busy making everything glassy and shiny that software that is quite responsive on my Celeron 630 running XP with 512Mb of RAM becomes laggier quicker on the iMac with 4Gb of RAM. I'm sure it is quite good if it's not tied into a network though.

Strengths:

- It's awesome.
- It can run both Mac and Windows.
- It's just plain easy to use.
- Much simpler file system.
- Multiple desktops.
- It's awesome.
- The applications for Mac are awesome (Final Cut, Shake, Coda).
- Multitasking is easier.

(Just a few that stuck out to me)

I like this. Prodding fun at error screens (which OSes of all forms make at some point) is silly, but this is the kind of thing that splits Apple apart from the cold, corporate monoculture at MS (which produces products which completely lack any kind of personality at all)

Although a little funny, rather annoying, it's still really unprofessional. For shame, for shame....

The only thing putting a small joke in a program prove that the developers had a little too much time on their hands. Microsoft is no more a "cold corporate monoculture" than Apple.

Uggh, you think apple has personality? Apple is not "Unique", they are the complete opposite.

Things that are unique about Apple...

The dock in Mac OS X.

I do hope that's sarcasm. One UI feature in their OS has nothing to do with the uniqueness of the company.

You know what's better than Apple? A Grapple. It's like an apple mixed with a grape, and taste better than both. And this is from someone who likes apples and grapes.

If it were an actual coded easter egg, I'd agree. But an icon (which would have to be made in some form regardless of whether or not it has a BSOD on the screen) is hardly that much of time waster

Also, after thinking a bit more about Apple vs. MS, I agree, it's not really whether one or the other has a corporate monoculture; they probably both do. I think it's the marketing, and general tone of their [Apple's] text / literature is just of higher quality. Both are probably boring corporations in terms of uniqueness. But whereas MS often tries to be "hip" and "off the wall", Apple actually manages to succeed (which I concede is more a marketing thing than a quality of Apple itself) - which considering the mammoth that MS is, is surprising: All that cash, and they still have the inability to make "down to earth" marketing / literature.

Apple's ability to be more blunt / "down to earth" is what I like about them (and what I think is reflected in that icon). Probably just clever marketing to make themselves appear "cool" - but at least when they go after that image, they actually do it right

I like Apple's products but I'm not a fan of them as a company. My ibook's been out of commision for about 2 months now and using a Vista machine isn't killing me. I'll see what the new macbooks look like before I think of replacing the mac in my life. Ofcourse all my photographs are in the iPhoto library now so I can't get those back unless I get another Mac. Got them all backed up luckily but I am a bit peeved. Previous versions would have still let me access the original files but I can't even do that with the latest version of iPhoto as I need a mac just to open to folder to get to the files.

I already knew this was the case when my Mac was working though so I've really only myself to blame but it's easier blaming a computer that can't answer back.

Actually no, if you go to the iPhoto Library file, right click it and choose "Show Package contents" you will see a folder called originals where all the photos are in. Just drag them out of there.
