Hi,
Anyone tried out IE 8? I just downloaded it because a website I go on a website that only works in IE, and since i was using an ancient version i might as well update. Firefox always rules well in my oppion, but IE 8 does seem to be better than 7, it opens a lot fast than IE7 and they put the default search provider as google not stupid live search.

Alex

I really don't recommend installing IE 8 on your main machine. Seriously, don't ever install IE Betas on your machine. Save that for virtual machines. Why, you ask? It's not rare for an IE beta to cause a need for a Windows re-install.

I doubt that THEY set the default to google, as they compete with google. Google was probably already set as your default browser on your computer somewhere.

IE8 passes the Acid2 test (finally), but it gets whomped on the acid 3 (at least the last beta I installed did) but that's okay because I haven't had a browser pass it yet (google says Opera and Safari both pass, but neither of them do on my computer, weird). IE is getting there! They're finally starting to be more standard compliant.

I've never heard of anyone having a problem with that... and I haven't...

IE betas are infamous for it.

Are you sure?

I don't know anyone who has had problems with IE. Firefox rules anyways, but IE isn't as bad as everyone says it is.

Chrome has a ways to go, but it is my favorite.

Not just IE, but the betas. IE files are integrated into Windows itself (though less so with Vista, and XP to some extent). So, an unforeseen bug in the beta may mean serious issues with Windows.

It's not necessarily integrated into Windows. The SHELL (explorer.exe) may use it, and IE may write to the registry or produce COM objects so that other apps may use it's web browser (the control).

It's probably in their development builds and not the public releases. Actually, here's a link I found that should give some useful info: http://www.anomalousanomaly.com/2008/03/06/acid-3/

Updating IE will update several Windows DLLs as well (e.g. WININET), so it is quite tightly integrated with Windows in this way

the fact that you can't uninstall IE tells me that it is TOO tightly integrated with Windows

You can with nLite . But that should not be needed.

There is no greater virtue, then the ability to face oneself.
