intel cpus have lots of cache memory c2d has up to 6mb

AMd cpus have only 2mb but they also have direct pipeline access to the memory so it dosent even need that much cache. its there just in case. so AMDs end up being faster than intel

also AMD cpus are cheaper. (because they dont have a lot of cache)

so why are intels so much more popular?

I know intel advertises more but really...

let the INTEL vs AMD bashing BEGIN!!!
i put on heavy metal music in the background to accompany the bloodshed

jk lts have a healthy debate instead

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

Intel CPU's tend to be ahead of AMD's in terms of technology, but sometimes AMD CPU's end up being cheaper. So for low-mid rang PC's AMD might be a better choice. But if you plan to go higher mid rang to top of the line then Intel is probably best.

Well.. My computer's processor is an AMD 64-bit. And if I recall correctly AMD was the first to do 64-bit... But in all honesty I don't really care. I like AMD more as a company. But Intel did make the chip first, which is saying a lot since AMD only reverse engineered and then added what Intel could have easily done. But really, I don't care. They're both great, and they're both not horrible to write software for.

As I understand it, however, AMDs are more prone to shorter life spans than Intel.

This is all just what I've heard from other people. I'm simply relaying the information.

Cheers,

-naota

It's not the CPU, it's the GPU

Yes and a good amount of fast memory. - For games. Other things like 3dsmax rendering, or real time stratagey games like medieval total war, require a lot of cpu power. Eyecandy shooters, as you say, gpu power is more important.

Last I checked, prices were pretty even. And the benchmarks I've seen for the Intel chips constantly blow AMD out of the water. I'd say thats a good reason why they win.

Hmm... I have a Pentium 4 desktop on the left running at 1.8gHz with 1Gb of RAM (my friend's) and a AMD Athlon XP desktop on the right running at 1.8gHz with 1Gb of RAM. Both run XP. The AMD is faster and far more responsive but gets seriously hot in comparison to the Intel.

That said, this isn't really a fair test; after all, their hard drives are different, their graphics cards very different and the AMD has been going for three years longer than the Intel.

????? What? Intel was the first chip company for windows pc's.
AMD came along later.

THE AMD has been going for longer. The Pentium 4 COMPUTER is newer, not the company.

For goodness' sake, learn to read.

I don't blame him, you worded that sentence very weirdly NeX. But yeah, you can't really compare the two pc's when all te other parts could be different. Even if they were it's still hard to get the comparison dead even.

He worded it pretty much how I would, what's wrong with it?

Of course we all knew General Reed would have to come along and defend what he uses without reading the post properly because he's a bit like that.

I too apologise as my sleep deprivation and C++ programming powered outburst was personally insulting and unnecessary.

Here's a link to a list of charts comparing results from AMD/Intel tests:

I know the best answer. AMD has a cooler name, and I donĀ“t want a CPU with heat problems, so I go with AMD.

Ok, sorry, could not refuse to joke. I like AMD, have a laptop with it and a stationary, both works well .

There is no greater virtue, then the ability to face oneself.
