Hi

I find it very... sad, that schools detest cellphones so much because you can really get so much out of them. I would like to make applications for mobile phones that will benefit people in general but especially those who are studying or teaching. These would be simple things like time tables, assignment lists, mobile data/formula booklets, other educational software and useful things in general.

If anyone can point me in the direction of some mobile software development tools or anything like that or can help in any way then please say. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I don't know Java but if there is no alternative then I guess I'll have to learn. My internet is fairly expensive so I can't download too much either.

thanks in advance

It depends on what phones. If you mean Windows Mobile, then look no further than Visual Studio. Start here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsmobile/default.aspx

NOTE: The express editions may or may not be compatible with Windows Mobile SDK's. :/

If you mean any other sort of phone, then all you need is this handy utility.

I don't know any teachers that detest cell phones at all-- in fact most of my teachers use their's during class. I think teachers detest students using cell phones during class, which is understandable.

Anyways, there's the Windows Mobile SDK, the IPhone/IPod Touch SDK, Java Mobile, the list goes on...use google.

Didn't TGC use to have a link at the top of the site to a sponsored mobile dev kit a while back??? I have this memory of it, yet I checked and it's no longer there. Am Imagining things again?

Most use Java.
But there are several exceptions, such as the iPhone, Windows CE, and I'm sure a few others.

Well I guess I'm aiming for Java as the end product, either the J2ME or those compatible with the smartphone.

What would be really nice is something like zenassem mentioned, which, if I'm not mistaken, is at omegabasic.thegamecreators.com . Or a drag and drop program that generates the code for your midlet. ...or something like that.

Thanks for your suggestions so far, except for the google. It might have been intended as a joke but it was, of course, the first place I looked. Because of my total inexperience in this field I find it difficult to find the right thing, so I thought I'd ask some real programmers

Yes, Omega Basic that's it! I never tried it, but at least I know I'm not going out of my mind. Why did they take it off the main TGC homepage?

Because it's no longer sold or supported.

It's in a big yellow box!

Should I continue coding or focus on my art? Vote here:

ermmm... how did i miss that?

Please note that The Game Creators Ltd. have stopped all support and sales of this software.

I guess it wasn't that good, or wasn't selling enough, or both. Shame, because I was always curious about trying it.

I was going to purchase it, but I delayed doing so, now its too late. Felt like a fool.

The product creators said they were going to release a brand new version. But the company website no longer works.

I am a big mobile gamer... but not as much as retro.

Edited, sorry.

The author of Omegabasic is none other than John Y, a mod here on the forums. You can try contacting him and asking for some recommendations.

ahhh, that's why it has the Synergy Editor. I'll have to ask John about OmegaBasic.

There were actually two different mobile phone development programs sold on TGC, but they are both no longer supported. I did download a demo of the one that isn't omega basic, but I can't remember what it was called.

As far as im awear, you could create a java application, which could then be run on phones that support java.
