Has anyone else tried to watch this new American version of Life on Mars? Here's its website, with a little video clip. I saw the original Life On Mars in its entirety (or so I assume anyway) on BBC America, and I absolutely loved it. The American version? I can't remotely say the same .

Okay, first and foremost, Sam isn't Sam anymore! The original Sam Tyler was smart, witty, and preferred a pen over a sword. This new Sam Tyler... well, in the second episode, there's a scene where he contemplates shooting a child because he knows that the kid will grow up to be a murdering criminal. They completely changed Sam's personality dynamic, to a point where you just don't care about what he's going through anymore. The actor playing Sam would be fantastic in something else, but this show just isn't for him.

Every other character in the show is ruined as well. Remember how many times you laughed out loud at Phil Glenister's portrayal of Gene Hunt? All of his awesome one-liners and the slight hint of physical comedy? Well, Harvey Keitel (Resevoir Dogs, Mother Juggs & Speed), an actor whose excellent in movies, delivers the poorest performance in this remake, to me anyway. I had such great expectations for Keitel playing Hunt, but like Tyler, this character is an entirely new person. Annie was hacked to bits as well, and they removed the Sam/ Annie love dynamic! WTH!

Oh, and before I forget, does anyone remember Sam Tyler finding a bloody MARS ROVER during his Manchester adventures? Because this Sam Tyler does. Yeah. I'm not kidding. As anyone whose even remotely familiar with the show can tell you, the show gets its name from a David Bowie song called, you guessed it, "Life on Mars." And as anyone whose even remotely familiar with David Bowie can tell you, the song has absolutely nothing to do with space travel, alien worlds, or either of the Mars rovers... not Spirit, and not Opportunity. I have a really terrible feeling in my stomache that Sam Tyler in this new series isn't in a coma, but he's actually been abducted by Martians or something.

Seriously, American TV executives ruin EVERYTHING they touch. The most brilliant and original American TV show I've ever seen was a show called John Doe, and they killed that after one season, regardless of a huge following and stellar ratings, because Fox needed, for reasons unbenownst to the world at large, to play another season of Joe Millionaire, which tanked horrifically. It's no big surprise that 80% of modern American television is based on British shows, we all know that. But this new envisioning of Life on Mars is nothing short of a travesty, in my not-so-humble opinion. Has anyone else seen it? What do you think?

I'm new to this "life on mars" thing, but I really enjoyed Firefly, though Fox cancelled that.

Hmm, sounds interesting. Was it cancelled in the UK? Or is it on in both?

Because then, I can decide which one I want to try out

I thought it was based on English 70s cop shows not American shows...

It's finished in the UK, not canceled... It just came to it's natural conclusion... I thought it was a brilliant show and I enjoyed every minute of it... I'm glad it had such a short run, what I tend to find with American shows is that if they're doing well they just hash them out until they get rubbish instead of ending on a high... Prison Break being, in my opinion, the worst offender... If ever a show should have been wrapped up in one season it was this... The first season was brilliant but half way through season 2 is became completely unwatchable as the plot became more ludicrous and convoluted...

Oh and if you liked Life on Mars you should check out Ashes to Ashes which is a sequel of sorts... It has a different main character and is set in the 80s... It still has Gene Hunt though... It's better than Life on Mars!

I would agree--- they not only ruin the shows but they run them for years into the ground (ala Office).

Are you kidding me? The UK office is horrible. Such bad and unfunny humor. The American version on the other hand is actually funny and has good comedic value. Man though, the UK version of Kenny vs. Spenny is crap.

I really liked the original Office. Steve Corell did his best work on the Daily Show imho. And come on, Ken vs. Spencer was brilliant! The Canadian/ American version was a bunch of gross-out humor, I've never been a huge fan of that. It's fun in small doses though.

I really wish we could, it seems we miss out on some of the best BBC shows, like the newer version of Mitchell and Webb, Jack Dee's show, a full season of Top Gear, and a few others. It seems like 90% of the BBC shows we do get are fantastic though, shy of Footballer's Wives or anything with the names "Gordon" and/ or "Ramsay" in them, lol.

But Life on Mars was the first show I really enjoyed that they made into an American version... I'm really let down. It's like bringing over Peep Show, but taking out all of the WWII references and getting rid of Jeremy's drug use. Or remaking Black Books and setting it in a Coffee Shop, lol.

Ironically, the show I mentioned earlier, John Doe, was on right before Firefly when both of them originally aired. They canned Firefly halfway through the season, which was rediculous. But at least Firefly fans got a movie out of it... John Doe fans have been left scratching their heads for years, shy of a few rambles from Fox executives.

No way man, they should really have tried to make the show different from the Canadian version, but still keep the same general idea, because it just isn't as funny. Anyway though, people in different places of the world have different senses of humor, so I guess it depends on the person.

The Office American version is hilarious. And I'm not the only one who thinks that, just look at how popular it is here, seems like everyone and their mom watches it and has at least one DVD set.

Aye, I've been kinda disappointed with the latest season. Last season was excellent!

I checked out the UK version, cuz everything was the same, but it was like, alternate reality. Creepy!

I really think it depends on which one you've seen first. My American cousins love the American Office but they don't enjoy the UK one, and everyone else I know who first watched the UK one doesn't find the American one very funny.

Americans love to run shows literally into the ground, and in the Office they overdo everything. They don't understand subtle humour, so everything has to be *so* embarrassing and *so* odd to make people laugh, while in the UK's Office things might not happen every 5 seconds, and things are much more subtle and realistic. Hello, David Brent would *never* have such an easy time getting a girl, any girl, to sleep with him--- it's just not canon!

I love Kenny vs. Spenny-- I didn't know they made a UK version Actually I didn't even know they show this in the US! Trailer Park Boys and Kenny vs. Spenny are Canada's greatest export since Degrassi

I thought Office UK had its moments but it bored me to death.

Not seen Office USA, so can't comment on it.

Office UK is better, though it isn't always funny, but that is the way its mean't to be done. They are mean't to be nobodies after all. And this is what Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant did very well..
