Installed it and uninstalled it. First, it insisted upon installing to C:. I hate software that does that. Then, bug after bug showed itself very quickly including fake MSN messages being presented it.

Also, most of the interface didn't fit on my (admittedly small) display.

Don't touch.

Well I didn't have any bugs. I really didn't mind installing it to C: in fact I didn't even check if I could switch it. Not sure about the MSN message as I don't use MSN. And I have no idea what didn't fit on your display.

I posted it because I thought it would be fun and add another dimension to hanging around the forums. The first post right away assumes that I am somehow making money from it, and now Nex has to come in and tell people not to touch it! So becuase you don't like it Nex, everyone has to stay away from it?

I don't use MSN either. I'm telling you, the moment this software booted it (being obviously fake) popped up. It was a piece of social engineering at its finest and disappeared when I killed the process. I've since tried the software and have concluded it's a touch useless; I can't get avatars to appear. I've downloaded the Firefox addon and nothing has happened.

Well If you can't get avatars to appear, then yeah I would agree it's pretty useless. I have firefox 3.01 and didn't even download the addon and it works. And it works in my IE.

I don't think the software itself is that bad now I've got it working; only sites launched from the taskbar icon seem to work. But it seems to be very insecure, what with that MSN message and many people choosing deceitful things as their icons.

Sorry, good idea, badly implemented.

By secure do you mean: secure communications or are you thinking by having it running someone can either hack your computer secure?

I haven't seen any deceitful avatars.

Regardless I don't think that the forum here is interested. Shame becuase I think it could be cool. And much easier to chat with fellow forum members while lurking on the forums. I mean there are many of you who I know have IM whether trillian, AIM, MSN etc... But how many over the years have I realy chatted with. Rather than just adding people from browsing their profile, I think it would have made for more discussions if we all had Weblin's. That way when you come to the forums we would all be in a forum chat (that is if you wanted to be visible). And we could open private lounges as well. It's like having the IRC page right on the forums, with avatars, and trading items, files, etc... Nevermind the fact that we could spot each others avatars if we made them our forum avatars. I was thinking some of the artists could help render some cool animation frames.

oh well. I am still the only weblin on the forum.

Yes, this is a great ad thread for a pretty useless app.

@zenassem:
I mean hack-your-computer insecure. Hell, I got the program to accept an EXE as an image. It didn't display anything but the EXE was downloaded into a temporary folder within easy reach of the user's My Documents the instant anyone saw it. I don't know how to make it run and I don't care.

The EXE was a 1Kb console application that said "HI!", waited three seconds then closed if you're wondering.

The idea is really good, maybe someone here should make their own. Because i wouldn't mind chatting with someone else on the forum for coding advice and what not. maybe TCG should create a chat room, of some sort.

Did you ever post a thread here, only to wish you hadn't? If so, you have an idea of how I am feeling. I'm not one to cry to Mods to have a thread locked, so now I will take the lumps that are coming. I have a few things to say, and then I'll let this thread go where it's going (hopefully left to sink to the next page).

The reasons I posted about it (Skip this if you dont' care)
=====================
First I will take responsibilty for making the post without fully checking out the program. I didn't test out it's security, bugs.. etc. Mainly because I wasn't thinking that this was an app to replace your messenger of choice. I just thought the idea of it seemed interesting. I happened to think that it would be cool to come to the forums, and instantly be able to live chat with anyone who was lurking (and wanted to be visible). I thought it could add to my own and others experience and enjoyment here.

I also thought it was cool (and still think it is) to automatically be able to chat with people on other sites I visit, and perhaps meet people who share interests with me without having to have a reason to specifically look up their IM nicks. Especially on sites that are not forum driven. So everywhere (if I have my Weblin turned on), every website I visit, I can automatically see other people who have Weblin, and discuss things with them. Not just private IM, but basically an open chat board available at every site. So when I stumbled acrossed it, and tried it, it opened up a new level to the internet that was't there before.

To me it was worth sharing here, if people here had liked it, and It would have given the forum here another dimension. I am sure I would have talked to many people that otherwise I wouldn't have.
=============================

More importantly please read this
************************************

That said, I really dont have a problem that it didn't go over well here. And I probably won't share anything like this in the future (lesson learned). Especially, if I haven't tested and have a complete understanding of such an app/addon inside and out. The only problem I have is the posts that have suggested that I posted this becuase of some financial profit to myself.

Quote: "How much did they pay you?"

Quote: "Yes, this is a great ad thread for a pretty useless app. "

I have no ties to the app that I posted. I simply stumbled upon it while searching for Desktop Manager Apps/Add-ons to Vista. I was intrigued by the idea, found it to be useful myself, and decided to share the find here in simple hopes that it could be something fun for the community. That's it.

So if you think the idea stinks, I am fine with that (I disagree, and think the idea of the app is worthwhile), but please don't suggest that I had any other motives other than to share something I thought was fun. I have been around these forums a long time and never have I done anything that would suggest that my intentions were anything but on the up & up.

***********************************

Lastly, while the app itself may not be all that it could be (I still don't know, becuase I just found it and haven't done any major testing), I still think the idea behind it is interesting. I wish that I knew how to code something liket that. So perhaps someone here who has that skillset can run with the idea, and make something that would be more secure and better for the community.

K, I feel better geting that off my chest.

@White Fang 12,
It seems that you perhaps are the only one who understood what I thought the app would be good for, and why I thought to share it here. There is an DB IRC chat room, I long ago forgot the server but I think the channel is #Darkbasic. Unfortunately, there is rarley anyone there, and really only a select few who still use it.

@Alucard,
As far as it being a useless app... Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I found it useful, and would have obviously found it more useful if more people here had it. As seeing I spend a majority of my time on-line here.

I'm of the opinion that the software is a great idea. Just a bit rough round the edges.

Anyway, on the subject of chatrooms like this; what if we made one like this as a community that accepted very restricted 3D models?

Say, a maximum of 32 limbs, each of which has to contain less than XX vertices, all of which have to be within certain boundaries WITH a human-based verification system to stop certain body parts being displayed.

Sounds awesome.

That would be cool I would use it and zenassem it was a good idea you posting about this because it has given us the idea to make our own,that could be better and who knows what other things we can add to this.

It wasn't intended to be 100% serious. That being said, it was at least 50% serious as you sounded like an ad there.

I have something against ads and people that sounds like them.

Things could have turned out better with a more carefully chosen introduction.

I gather this application sends all your browsing habits to their server? This is the only way I can see how it knows if someone is on the same Web page as you. I don't like the idea of someone knowing when I do my online banking or login to sites which are a work-in-progress and not for public viewing.

I was honestly hoping the post would die... grrr It's just hard not to reply sometimes.

@zappo,

Here is a link to the privacy page. http://www.weblin.com/privacy.php?room=en8

I think you are correct that it would be inadvisable to have it running when you would rather be private. ie banking, browsing WIP sites etc...

Also, there were a few items I wasn't to fond of. Top Cloud for instance, and Google Analytics.

I also thought this was important:
Quote: "The only exception is the transmission of your current Internet address to the Topcloud. If you do not wish this, you can deactivate this transmission under the setting "transmit Topcloud data"."

So yes, if you have the program running the Weblin Site knows what site you are on.

I think people would have to use their brain when it comes to using an application or addon such as this. It's just common sense not to have it running when you don't wish to be visible. Not that everyone has common sense or computer sense. I know I wouldn't have it running while online-banking, checking my email etc... The same goes for any communication software. I don't care how secure it's suppose to be, it's just inviting trouble to not take secure measures for yourself.

So that's the key really. Don't have it automatically start when you launch your browser. Only use it when you choose, and when you are looking to use it and chat with others.

Uh, IRC is here:

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?gf=irc

There's an entry to it on the drop down box at the top left where it says "My Threads".

If nobody's in #darkbasic, head over to lobby. You can do so by typing:

/join #lobby

There's usually a number of people there. Want a private room? Type "/join #whateverYouWantToEnterHere".

As for this Weblin stuff, I was gonna try it at home, but forgot. Since I browse these forums at work, it's pretty useless to me I can't go installing this on my work compy!

It's not just for BYOND you know!
