Actually, it isn't. It was originally planned as a sequel but later for some reason they decided against it. Wolfenstein 3D: Spear Of Destiny is the official sequel to the game and of course Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the third.

Anyway, ROTT was one of the best games I played in the old days lol.

It was the succesor and in my opinion the sequel. It used the same technology and they only changed its name at the last minute... nah, it's the sequel.

SoD was nothing but a beefed-up addon pack. Not very beefed up, actually, come to think of it.

So what if it used the same technology? the story was completely different... nah, it's NOT the sequel

Exactly, just because it uses the same engine it doesn't mean it's a sequel. Do you know how many games use the UT2K3 engine these days? Do you think they're all sequels to Unreal Tournament? Ha!

'Story'? There was no story to Wold 3d, so anything could be its followup. It had about 10 words to vaguely describe why you shot everything that moved, but that was about it.

Not to mention that Wolf3D had two predecessors in 1983 and 84...

Furthermore...

"The first sequel to Wolfenstein 3D was released only for the PC in 1992. This 20-level game is called Spear of Destiny. Since then, there has been only one sequel to Wolfenstein 3D. In Fall 2001, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released for both the PC and Mac."

I don't call 20 new levels a sequel. That's a cheap addon pack

On top of that-- yes, three pages, but are you aware of the resolution the game runs in? On top of that, half of it is excessive use of adjectives. That makes about 1/3 of a good 800x600 document... and no, I do not call that a 'story'

The fact is, iD named Spear of Destiny the sequel and not ROTT. You can't go against the company that created it just because you don't think it qualifies as a sequel. That's silly.

Oh, and http://www.idsoftware.com/games/wolfenstein/wolf3d/ is the official source for that information.

I almost cried when I saw this post.

ROTT is one of the the most pointlessly fun and violent games ever. I assume we all turned on the GORE mode, where pieces of a guy would keep fall from the sky 30 seconds later.

Did it need a sequel?

No. It was very repetetive.

FPS were a blur until multi-player on-line became widespread. After the first successful generation, such as Duke, Wolf, ROTT, etc., there was a bad lapse.

Notwithstanding, ROTT was one of the last good memories I have of my 486.

'You can't go against the company that created it just because you don't think it qualifies as a sequel. That's silly.'

I most certainly can and will. id has no concept of 'storyline' or 'plot' as proven by the utterly plotless Quake and Quake III and the fact that they had to reuse one of their old 'plots' for Doom III. Any of their games can be stitched together in any order and still work just as well as a story; see, with Quake II being the only something-like-a-plot oritented game in the whole franchise, you can basically make it 'the dramatic end' or 'the spectacular beginning' or 'it's somewhere in the middle' and it still works just as well.

@ Exeat: lol yeah, those were really good

@ mouse: actually you're pretty right...i never played Q1, Q3, or Q3A, but Q2 was pretty good as far as story is concerned...definitely not original though.

Storyline?!

What are you on!?!

Look up the word MacGuffin (it's a film term), and then write a three page report on its importance to video games.

Can we please drop the pretension that a FPS must have a storyline?! You're just running around a maze slaughtering other human beings! If killing isn't good for its own sake, then . . . join PETA.

This ain't Final Fantasy we're talkin' 'bout!
