Assembla.com are now going to charge for SVN hosting*. You can host open-source projects, but for most of us that is not an option.

I have migrated to http://www.xp-dev.com. It's quite new (and hence looks very basic at the moment) and it's free. There is an import/export option coming, but in the meantime, it was imported for me, just by sending my Assembla export by email. The site says it will stay free forever, with alternative ways to fund the site.

So far, it's all been good. Once they imported my site, I used "Relocate" in TortoiseSVN, and just carried on as normal.

*SVN is a source-code management system that allows you to roll back to previous versions, branch, tag and work on source code as a team, or from multiple locations. It can be controlled entirely through Windows Explorer using TortoiseSVN

There were others, but they only give a couple of megabytes of storage. This one states 300MB, I might even start uploading my binaries too

Hey guys, we (at farawayhost.com) are also looking into offering SVN hosting for very cheap (not free at this time though). If you're interested, sign up for the forums, we'll be making an announcement sometime by the end of the week.

I got the same message as well. Oh well, the project was a dud anyway. I'll keep xp dev in mind for the future though.

I have a noob question:

I use Tortoise locally on my system for my projects, and Beyond Compare for versioning and diff'ing. Is an online SVN's only benefit that a whole team can simultaneously check-out/check-in files? Or is this possible natively with Tortoise?

Also, is there a good "code review" functionality built into the online systems?

Subversion is hosted online by Assembla, XP-dev or whoever. Tortoise SVN is simply a nice Windows UI for people like me who just want to use it without worrying about the internal workings or command-line syntax.

You can check history, revert back to a specific commit, view a specific source from any update etc.

Take any source file, compare it to the current version, base version, export a copy or revert back to this update etc:

Yah but I have all that on my machine locally without using a 3rd party. I assume the benefit of having it hosted on a server somewhere is that others on your team can check out and commit files?

Exactly. I work on a desktop and a laptop, so for me it's fantastic. Plus, it's not all on one machine if you have a disk crash or hardware failure.
