PROJECT CANCELLED: SORRY GUYS, I DON'T BELIEVE THIS GAME IS UP TO A HIGH ENOUGH QUALITY TO SATISFY MYSELF. YOU WILL BE HEARING HEARING FROM ME SOON WITH ANOTHER PROJECT, AFTER I'VE DONE SOME HEAVY RESEARCH INTO THE FPI SCRIPT LANGUAGE. Would a mod please lock this thread, thank you.

The Mainframe[WIP]

Welcome to my first officially "released" game. I would first of all like to thank Lee for making the FPSC engine, and to the active members of the community such as Plytire, Dark Seth, Bond1, Fletcher, Butterfingers and xplosys as well as everyone else. Without out them, this project would not have been possible.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Mainframe Plot:

The Year is 2256, and Earth is at it's technological peak. There is world peace, and the Earth is governed by 7 world rulers, with the entire population working in harmony.

During the years of 2104, the first space ship capable of travelling faster than the speed of light was produced, named the Golding (named after the creator, Professor John Golding) and worked sucessfully. However, while this was a breakthrough in technology, it brought a wave of tension upon most of the population, due to the fear of other life forms attacking their planet.

The Government was quick to respond, and began building space ships built for war to keep the population safe, although the Government seriously doubted the existance of other life.

However, during a deep space flight that attempted to explore the outer reaches of the Milky Way, of the three Goldings that left, only one returned, badly damaged, and it crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Nobody on board was left alive, and the ship appeared to have a green gas inside it's chassis.

This caused a public outcry, as if it determined their worst fears of other life.

The Government produced a supercomputer (named the Mainframe) which is designed to control all of the Earths defences. The Mainframe itself is extremly powerful, and controls satellites and the UPS for space ships.

Aswell as this, they began training super soldiers. This was a Government secret as it would have been called inhumane by many, however many people still signed up for it.

Men aged 18-28 were placed into a 2 year training program, all done cyber-netically (basically like in the Matrix, they were attached to a computer, but they felt as if they were actually moving etc.)

Alas, due to the building burning down that contained the children, they were all believed to be dead, and the building was boarded up so no one could enter or leave the building.

And the children were all dead. Except one. His name is Jack, and he has been stuck in the training program for 10 years.

However, due to some explosions, the power for the building has been cut off as well as the training program, and Jack has woken up, aged 28.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
You play as Jack, who has just woken up for the first time in 10 years, and you must find out the truth what has happened.

This game is a Subtle Horror, containing zombies. What I mean by
subtle is, I'm aiming for a more atmospheric and story driven game rather than a shoot up, which is why you don't actually encounter any zombies until half way through the game, just clues.

Here is a progress list:

Story/Plot - 100%
Custom Player soundset - 0%
Custom Segments/Textures - 30%
Music - 80%
Sound Effects - 60%
Custom HUD - 0%
Objectives List - 100%

Loading Image - 0%
Title Music - 0%
--------------------------
Prologue - Land of Dreams - 100%
A Charred Past - 100%
Explorations, Discoveries - 10%
First Contact - 0%
Regrouping - 0%
Destination Reroute - 0%
Boarded - 0%
The Mainframe - 0%
Epilogue - Containment - 0%
--------------------------

At the moment, the game is not running off of any mod. I am however hoping that I can incorporate Lemur 2 with it when it is released. The game will be using Bond 1's zombies

Level 1 is basically just an opening scene - you are allowed to explore a small section of the training program, and in level 2 you have to find your way out of the building (if you read the plot, you will know it is the one which burnt down).

If anyone has a nice player soundset, please contact me . Thanks.

NOTE: SCREENSHOTS DO NOT REFLECT FINAL PRODUCT. CUSTOM HUD HAS NOT YET BEEN IMPLEMENTED, AND MOD FEATURES SUCH AS BLOOM AND AMBIENCE OCCLUSION WILL HOPEFULLY BE IMPLEMENTED INTO THE GAME SOON.

And also, ignore the extremly low FPS. This is only ocurring because my laptop isn't exactly built for gaming (1.83Ghz Processor and 358mb Graphics Memory)

Here are some screens:

When I've gotten a bit further I will create a trailer. Thanks for viewing, and please share your thoughts, and as always, contructive critisism is appreciated.

UPDATE: 10/08/08

Story changed slightly
Level 1's islands are now no longer just floating platforms, new skybox, and better ambiance and lighting. Also, in level 2, the fire now emmits a light. Thanks to coffeegrunt for pointing all of this out. Pictures below (P.S All outdated pictures will be removed and a direct link will be added to be kinder on your bandwidth):

Much of that story seems quite Halo-inspired......

Looks great! But some of the outdoor scenes look badly done, e.g., the lighting, and that wierd floating platform.....

@coffeegrunt

Yes, Halo was really my first ever video game I played, and it's been my favourite since, and it inspired me to make this. But, when the final product comes it, it will be hardly anything like Halo.

I've come up with a solution to the floating platforms, and I'm working on the lighting on both levels.

I must say, on closer inspection of your pictures, your framerate is terrible....

Outdoor areas are all under 10 fps, and the indoor areas look likke they never touch the high-twenties....

Yes, I mentioned this earlier in my first post.

"And also, ignore the extremly low FPS. This is only ocurring because my laptop isn't exactly built for gaming (1.83Ghz Processor and 358mb Graphics Memory)"

Also, 9FPS is extremly high for my laptop xD You should see the city I'm currently working on..Im averaging at about 2-5FPS

All of these lovely plants are from the free landscape kit, made by the creator of Signs IV. I believe it's available at fpsfree.com
