I have 2 comps
both 733mhz
one runs win ME
the other i reformatted and just loaded win XP (because my sys crashed with win 98)
well i've never had a problem makeing .X models on my win ME comp or when my comp was win 98

but since i "upgraded" my comp to win XP it will not create .X models? it just makes a text file with the .X data?

i have cshop - doesn't make .X (does on other comp)
i have canvas - doesn't make .X (does on other comp)
i have the 3ds to .X converter that came with DB - nope
i even downloaded the sdk for direct x9 trying to get it to work - nope

does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried to load these files into dark basic? They might work. I have the same "prob" (not anykind of a prob) and I still can load them. If not, then I don't know...

well they work, so i guess i'll just have to use DB to see them

i didn't realise that even the models i transfered over from my other comp are in the text format?
weird

i guess ultimately that is what all files are even the viewing of this website and the apollo design on your post, but i thought the .X file had to be rendered first into something other than a text file?

any reason why one of my comp compiles and renders the model into a viewable file and the other one doesn't?

The progams MAKE the file the same way on both your computers. What happens when you double click a file is a completely different ballgame!

First time you double click on a file with an unknown extension like .X, windows will ask you which program to open it in. Most people select notepad. You are also given option as to whether to ALWAYS open files with that extension in your chosen program.

In Win98, you can change that assignment by holding shift whilst right clicking file and you get new menu option called OPEN WITH.

Win XP always offers you a choice.

When you say computer compiles and renders the model when you doubleclick it. Which program is doing the rendering? Just change other computer to use same program.
