Here is a little help for those having trouble understanding how to set the keyframes for Milkshape animations.

I wanted to record it being done as a video, but Fraps wouldn't record Milkshape right.
So, I had to use stills, but here it is anyway...

Hope it helps

EDIT
I made a new video showing how I merged the XM8 mesh onto the stock FPSC animations using FragMOTION.
This had been requested previously in another thread, so it had priority.
I didn't want to clutter the forums with my videos, so I will put all of my "A Quick Look At..." series here in one thread.

Here is a link to the new video "A Quick Look At FPSC Stock Weapons & FragMOTION" on YouTube.
The YouTube Flash conversion ruined the picture quality, but its ok if you watch it in High Quality.

Here is a link to the new video "A Quick Look At FPSC Stock Weapons & FragMOTION" in a clearer version. (60mb)
If you want to save this video, just right-click the link above and then select "Save Target As..."

Thanks for the tip, but 300 bucks is more than I want to pay right now to record video.
I'll give the trial a whirl but it looks more like a video editor, whereas I only need the screen capture functions.
If I end up using this tool, then I would have to charge for the tutorial to re-coop the cost instead of giving it away for free.
I don't feel like charging for tutorials yet, because I am only covering basics right now.

Now here is a tip for you...
Use the edit button on your posts instead of double posting. (edit button is right under your avatar on your posts)
That will keep people from fussing at you about it.

Thanks

You can use screen to exe, it only records 4 frames per second but it won't slow down Milkshape 3d at all, I can send you the file if you want because the newer version is still free and it has a little more futures but the video quality is really crappy.

Here is an example video tutorial that I made a while ago. Be nice, it was my first tutorial.

I have Camtasia Studio (they gave an older version away for free a while back) and the drag is just as much,if not worse, than Fraps.
For my pc Fraps is the best.
Fraps is a lot easier to figure out too.
And it's a lot cheaper and the demo doesn't expire.

I usually find a similar weapon in my guns folder and use that as a blueprint for my weapon animation.

Yeah, that's what I do too

I did a search on screen capture and screen recorders and came up with this FREEbie...

AutoScreenRecorder from Wisdom-Soft, and it looks promising. (best of all its free for non-commercial AND commercial work)

I had to export the video in a better format (HD 720) from Movie Maker (when adding audio) in order to retain enough quality to read the button labels on the MilkShape interface, but AutoScreenRecorder worked with MilkShape.

Yeah, but with this you can use the FM Screen Capture Codec from Fox Magic if you need speed.
Check it out, because it is really fast.
The drawback to using that codec is the license though.

Thanks,
The problem with going in depth in the subject matter is that you end up with a very long video.
That means really big file sizes to have to upload/download, and that is not very user friendly.
I'll try to give as much detail in the next one without dragging the length out too much.
I'll probably just touch base on different subjects for a modular approach.
But yes, I will go into other areas and in more detail.

Really? ... lol

Sorry, for the lack of the mouse pointer (cursor).
I forgot to run the program as administrator (stupid Vista), so it didn't work right.
Now, I have the cursor being displayed and it shows the little circles when you click something.
So, the next one will be much better now that I can display the cursor.
Sorry, if the lack of the cursor made it confusing or harder to understand.

Nice tutorial

This is very helpful. So you can just import the animations for an existing weapon and apply them to a new model. Nice.

Adding a video for the FPSC import with fpe animations and gunspec etc would be a great next step.

The only thing I think people are really going to struggle with is trying to make their own animations for weapons using hands. Even when using the ones provided by SimonB from MP6 you'll need good animation skills.

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

Quote: "Adding a video for the FPSC import with fpe animations and gunspec etc would be a great next step."

Yeah, the good thing about using the stock animations is that you can use the same gunspec with just a few changes.

Yeah, I found that out on the XM8, but they didn't turn out too bad for only using two bones.
There are a couple tricks to making the task of adding hands easier, so that would make a good video.

I want to do the next video about UV Mapping in FragMOTION.
I touched base on texturing a bit in the last one when we filled in the clip's hole, but I did not show anything about the UV Mapping.
It will be short (A Quick Look At), as I plan to keep each one under ten minutes if possible.
So, I would basically show how to Map the different sides of a basic object like a clip or something.

If you've had some success animating the XM8 with hands that would be a really useful video. Especially for the tricks you mention as when I last tried I found it difficult just to see what I was doing because of all the joints and bones in a small area.

Edit - I've attached a pic to give an idea. Pick the bones out of that.

Quote: "If you've had some success animating the XM8 with hands that would be a really useful video."

Yes I have had some success at it.
TGC was kind enough to allow me to release the modified commando files in the XM8 thread.
Check out that thread for the download. (the one with hands is there too)

Quote: "Especially for the tricks you mention as when I last tried I found it difficult just to see what I was doing because of all the joints and bones in a small area."

I did not want to even try to manipulate that many bones either, and if you aren't using them then you don't need them.
So, the first thing I did was remove all of the hand bones and relaced them with two. (one for arm and one for hand)
That made animating them easier, and it turned out better than I thought it would with only two bones.
Check it out in the XM8 thread if you want the downloads, or if you just want a peek then watch a video of it on YouTube.
Just remember that the XM8 has a button in front of the trigger to release the self-falling clip, so your other hand can be grabbing another clip.
It speeds the loading of the XM8, and explains why the hand catches the empty clip in air, rather than pulling it out.
In our case though, we caught the empty instead of letting it fall.

Quote: "Edit - I've attached a pic to give an idea. Pick the bones out of that."

WOW!
Looks like reducing the joint size may help there.
Here is what my version looks like...
Luckily the shape of the hand holding the gun was perfect for holding the clip too, so the fingers didn't need bones.

can you also post a picture of how the settings for exporting in milkshape would look like?

I already did that in the XM8 thread, but here is it again.
NOTE: To get to this panel click File>Export>DirectX (JT)...
Of course, your number of frames in the animation range may differ, but the rest should be the same.
The "Positioon Scaling" setting is the one to remember, because it defaults to .1 every time, which is no good.

Good point. Once I removed the finger bones things became more managable. After some testing I modified Luke314pi's Railroad Tie melee weapon and added animated MP6 hands. See attached.

Thanks for the help Conjured Entertainment.

Looks nice Nomad.

That railroad tie would take both hands to swing, so it looks realistic with both hands.
I do notice the end of the finger tips going a bit into the tie on the left hand.
So, you might want to rotate the hand a bit, but the arm looks ok.
It's really not that noticable though, so you could just leave it like it is.

Glad I could help.

Thanks guys, and nice work Maniac.
Nice way to point out that it isn't limited to modifying stock stuff.
I guess if you started with a weapon that already has hands then it makes it a lot easier to get hands onto your custom weapon.
