Yeah, he would need to use the default paths, but he probably does anyway.
As far as redistribution, I am sure TGC might make an exception since this is for a school project and he does intend to order.

Email TGC about your problem and maybe there is something they can do to ship it faster or something.
If not, then maybe they will allow a friend to build it since the only person you are distributing it to is your teacher.
