Okay.

I'm new. I'm REALLY new. My passion is creating games, and it has been since I was 6, playing DnD with myself until I finally had siblings to test my campaigns on. I discovered Rpg Maker a few years ago and haven't closed the program since the day I got it. I can write, draw, and think my way into or out of any problem I've ever come across when it comes to logical game thinking. On top of that, I've got thousands of huge ideas for commercial possible games just eating to get out and be made.

However; my problem is this. I have the passion, the creativity, and the drive for this. But I don't know how to program yet. I've taken one semester in C++ from Westwood College, and quit due to money and other problems, but other than that... I don't know anything beyond the hello world and basic commands. I have all my books from college, and I have no problem reading them, but I don't even know if C++ will help me when it comes to this program.

I'm considering buying the DarkGame Studio program for $90. I've never created anything in 3d before, and my art experience is limited to detailed concept drawings using a Wacom tablet.

What I need to know, is... am I wasting my time and money here? What exactly is it going to take for me to do this? College is out of the question right now, and I'd rather not spend a hundred thousand dollars to learn something I could create on my own.

Oh. And this game will eventually be an Orpg. Which I already know probably doubles my difficulty.

Thanks.

Darkbasic is a good starting place for making 3d games. However it does have its limits. Once you hit them then upgrade to something like leadwecks.

I have been using darkbasic for a long time now and it easy to pick up and use. The good thing is its a great as an idea tester for later on as it can handle most things. For me games programming is a hobby not a job. I learn new things every day that will help me in the long term like sharders and AI.

Your C++ will be helpful in that you know how to set out a program and you can write dll files for darkbasic.

As for the massively multiplayer online game it will take a long time and darkbasic can be used as a front end but your need to code the server part in something like C++. Just boils down to speed and that your want the server to do server things not render graphics and the like.

Also don't jump in the deep end start small and build it up to it. E.g. Build a rpg and then build a massively multiplayer online game the good thing is your have most of the code already done.

I'll add something later on.

Look - you said money is/was an issue at the moment - SKIMP BRO for now ... learn where to spend your money - The DarkGAME Studio is a good deal - but so is 100% free while you're leanring what to do and what you'll need - DarkGDK C++ is free, the IDE from Microsoft is free - than when you need lots of custom media and stuff because you're getting into it - then get game studio - I like tree magic/insta tree all that Cartography shop is ok - but 3DWS is better and worth the cash in my opinion - but I'd hold off... start learning to code and load models you get for free - shoot some come with free DarkGDK C++ version I think... plus if you ever want to sell your game, you'll need some cash to pay for the privy - thats how DarkGDK C++ get's theirs...

DarkGame Studio is a deal - but if times are that tough - have fun - save your cash - learn how to code - learn how to model - blender is free and so is TRueSpace now ... a decent 3d Modeler ...

Take it slow you have a lot to learn - like finding your niche - indy's tend to be jacks of all trades but you might be better at modelling - or story telling or making 2d art - or programming - who knows - but I'd just hate to have you drop 90$ when you're already admittedly strapped - every one wants to sell a license but not when its license versus necessities etc.

P.S. When I know I REALLY need something or just want it like crazy... I might spend when I shouldn't... but at least wait until you know EXACTLY what you want ... so you don't regret the purchase....

DarkGDK is free (not commercial free, but you can worry about that later).

If you are short on cash, I'd say go with darkgdk, its basically the same thing as dbpro, in c++ format instead of basic.

Also, all the models in the fpsc boards (a LOT of which are free) are compatible with darkgdk (they are also compatible with dbPro, but its a bonus, nevertheless)

Wow. I REALLY appreciate all of the replies already. I can't believe how busy this forum is compared to others I've been on asking about this kind of stuff.

First off. It turns out that the $90 isn't a problem. My family is very supportive, probably after seeing a lot of my art, ideas, and RMXP games. But my grandparents offered to pay for the DBstudio. But I still don't want to waste their money, ya know?

Where is the free one, and what else am I going to need to actually create an rpg? Can I get a list of links? That would be awesome.

Again, I really appreciate all of the responses. And tonight I'll start reading my bible again. (The C++ bible.)
