I really want to start making custom media for my games, as some model packs do not just have what I need. I've used the newest version of 3D Studio Max at school, but found it extremely difficult to use. I want a program that can make nice models, but isn't too hard, I would also like some easy tutorials. Any ideas? Milkshape is a popular one, but I just don't know how easy it might be. Anim8or is what I used before, but generally did not produce what I wanted model-wise, low poly models that looked blocky.

Try milkshape, its pretty good, but not as powerful as blender which is said to have a confusing setup but its really not that bad (I don't use it though). For texturing, photoshop is great but if you can't afford it use paint.net which is pretty powerful too.

As for UV mapping, I like Lithunwrap which is also free.

definitely go with milkshape if you want easy interface and a decent animation exporter this side of 3dsmax for .x files. I'd also get the trial of fragmotion and use it for the import of animated .x files and then export to .ms3d files for editing in milkshape.

Blender REALLY ISN'T as hard as everyone says, download it and check out this wiki tutorial book: it helped me LOADS, i still haven't exactly got down texturing but im sure if you use lithunwrap you could do just fine.

seriously, download blender and follow the first 5 or 6 tuts in the book, you might be surprised.

I own Photoshop 6 (still great!), and FragMotion for when I used to edit existing models to make dead bodies. So, I will check out Milkshape, and purchase if I like the trial. Anyone know of any GREAT and easy tutorials?

I use AC3D.

Pro: very powerfull, easy to learn, integrated UV mapping, good documentation and plugins

Con: not free althought not so expensive (may be exist a trial version, not sure), no animation, not much used in this forum

Blender is awesome, probably equal to 3DS MAX in power, equal to nothing in cost.

MilkShape 3D is a great affordable way to start modeling custom assests for FPSC.
However it lacks the ability to retain animations when importing X files. (meshes only)
That is where FragMOTION come into play, because it can retain the animations on import and export in the MilkShape format.
Okay, at this point you may ask, why not use FragMOTION and skip milkshape?
FragMOTION exports X files in a format that is not compatible with FPSC. (need X (jt))

FPSC Stock X files, or other popular formats > FragMOTION > MilkShape 3D > X (jt) > FPSC

Paint.NET for texturing and be sure to get the effects plug-ins like Normal Mapping, etc.

Here are some helpful tips for exporting X files from MilkShape for use in FPSC...
