Actually, to make more of a point . . . it is important to keep up with the major security postings, Especially those regarding media types, because DX and Windows Media can prove pretty vulnerable.

I was actually surprised by this recent update, because it hit MIDI files. You would think that one of the oldest audio formats would be a bit safer for use (granted, the prob could have been in the DX code).

Whatever the case, if you miss a "critical" update more than a week, you're walking around naked.

Most "exploits" come in two flavors:

Immediate attacks in high volume against newly discovered security flaws -- targets of opportunity.

Low volume droning attacks against unpatched machines for exploits that are older than dirty.

Then of course, there are the really old viruses, like Stoned Monkey/Empire that have been around since the days of shareware floppies, and continue to make the rounds because they have an excellent MO.

actually the patch was only officially released last Wednesday... and i wouldn' download the current build - wait for 9.03 (9c) because the current one will crash 40% of the time when you try to install it.
(or rather simply reboot your system.)

to be honest isn't really an essential update niether, thats why there was no major news about it.

8truths you need to shape up mate, your begining to piss off alot of users here ... if people know of this patch the day it comes out or not really doesn't give you any reason to be rude!

Ummm... Raven...

MS released an initial report and patch a couple weeks ago. They released it in two forms: one with an updated installer for DX 9, and the other as just a patch for each OS and the appropriate versions of DX afflicted.

As for rude, I here a rumor that pot was calling the kettle black.

the report & patch were released 8days ago (not a couple of weeks)
and it wasn't OFFICIALLY released until wednesday.

thats only because they got bitched at that people knew about this security breech but ms wasn't releasing anything to fixx it.
still doesn't make it stable though.

as for your little rumor - sorry but i'm not rude, abrasive yes - but not rude.
through all of your claimed intelligence it would've been thought that perhaps you'd understand the difference between simple simantics.

obviously not though

I never claimed intelligence.

And it's "semantics". But spelting ain't yer bahg, write?

Don't lecture on semantics if you cannot spell semantics.

BTW -- that isn't a case of semantics. It's a case of trying obfuscate meaning.

lmao ... you really are rich arn't you!
yes you have claimed intelligence, infact you've claimed to be a damn near genius - almost everytime a post about intelligence comes up.

someone who's far smarter than the rest of his school who was in trouble with a teacher for god knows what but you thought she had it in for you cause you were smart or some other crap.

i don't give a flyin' monkies how the word was spelt, i can spell it however i chose to as long as you understand what was being said explain what the problem is... for all you know i could be dyslexic.
you ever think of that brainboy?

lol obfuscate, the funny thing is the way you've used that actually means that you are doing the exact same thing here.
this is a case of semantics, provided you understand what it means, and what it means to be rude.

i have a feeling you think a sematic statment is just a potatoe-potartoe thing
you can swollow the dictonary mate but still beline the meanings of actual words you use eh?

don't try to get smartarse with me here oki, cause no matter what big amazing words your brain has swollowed i know just as many mate - and i have a feeling that unlike you i've actually bothered to take in thier meanings to use them within the correct sentace structure.

but i'll let Mr. Einstein try again at one of his big long words, and if that doesn't work i'm sure a nice flaming will be just enough to get my BBQ going won't it.
god i hate teens, they should learn to sit down and be quiet until thier 21 ... no aspect of thier actions

Shooting myself in the foot?

Are you that determined to act like you're on top? Get a hooker if you want to be on top (or do they trash and threaten to call the police, too?).

Here...

[monotone voice] Yes, Raven. You really got me by the balls. Your superior powers have once again thwarted my attempts to usurp your role as the cock of this walk. Oh dear, I am so utterly baffled by how brilliant you are with language. Please, forgive my transgressions.[/monotone]

Happy now?

Or will you start some session about defining sarcasm, and screw up by actually defining irony or impunity or Sarcaeseans?

Now, for my patented Raven impersonation:

"Shut up! Shut up! You're so dumb! Shut up! I'm charper than a rayzer! Shut up!

"Look. If you need to reely do fiss surt ov thing, learn how to be as cool as me.

"I am Raifin, a berd that can only be hunted onlee 180 days out the yeer in many US states. You do noht a want a peace of me."

BTW -- nice sig. Looks like it changed.

Raven? Your better than cable; the TV still hasn't yelled back.

That must have been an engrossing conversation you had with whoever.

"Is whoever on first?" "No . . . whoever's one second . . ." "who's on first?" "Yeah, right."

Raven . . . I had my doubts. But, that was a beautiful tribute to some of the masters of comedy.

Thank you.

I now retire to weep at the beauty of it.

I know how you two can settle your differences - a game of paper, scissors, rock should do it. Best of 500 should be enough to give us all a bit of a rest, and to allow re-purchase of confectionary.

boy boys don't fight you can both marry me!

though i still remain neutral to this argument i'd just like to state that raven does act a bit high and mighty, i've seen so many people like him on forums i've been to and they act all posh like they are king of everything. The arrogance can be quite annoying. But 8 was a bit harsh with the first post, but that pic is damn funny so he is forgiven.

I think its pretty dangerous to change it (because your changing parts of the kernel)

only the bitmap resources... not like i'm messing with any real code - changing the boot screen for the OS is like changing an icon in a normal exe

simple as pie and harmless - only difference is you need the correctly service packed kernel for that OS, and the patch has to be applied each time you update because service packs simply replace them not patch (which can be annoying)

the WinXP ones are fun because they no longer have palettes like the old OSs - which means that everything you input and export are blank using the standard 16 windows colours
