I want to learn how to model my own weapons and characters, which program (perferably free) is best?

One picture is worth 128K words.

I personally find Milkshape the easiest and nicest for only $45.00. You can download a trial of it, and make a decision based on that.

There is also 3D Studio Max (expensive and difficult), Anim8or (somewhat difficult, but free), and Blender (free, but difficult).

I really love Milkshape, it's very simple so even I can create decent FPS ready material. Milkshape can create models, apply textures, animate, import and export to many formats, and many other things.

Although 3DSMax is very powerful and very expensive, I do believe that's what most pros use, that and Maya. Anim8or never really floated my boat. Blender was way too complex for my small minds. Wing3D's learning curve was a bit too steep for me, I had trouble navigating, etc.

You should get a more non-biased opinion from someone else, though. I love Milkshape and use it so often, so I'm gunna say Milkshape.

EDIT: Been looking 'round and saw that AC3D looks extremely powerful. There's also another program that is piss-easy to use, but I seem to have forgotten what is was called...hm...

My first model in Milkshape was actually a gun, not too bad, not the greatest, but ANYONE can use it. It produces decent poly models.

I'm a Blender fanboy, so I'll recommend Blender. Did I mention Blender?

I find wings 3D very easy to use... Plus you can export easily your model from there to .X format...

Milkshape 3D is NOT the way to go. Its okay making small primitives but seriously is out powered by such programs as blender and wings.

Wings is okay, easy to learn and use but lacks alot of features.

I'd personally recommend blender. It has ALOT of potential and is underestimated. The possibilities are endless with this program. I would have used it but seeing as my dad had already bought max For landscaping and engineering design I used that instead because I had already known how to use that program. If my dad hadn't had max I certainly would have used Blender.

I'd reccomend gmax. It may not be supported by autodesk or discreet anymore... But it is still very good for those who can't afford max. Mind you it's version 5.4 (I think), not version 9. You can get it on turbosquid.

Crav3: Nice P90!...erm... Shotgun. Do I see a little bit of AK in there too? I think I do. Awesome.

It's not that Blender is underestimated, it's simply more difficult, especially for newer users.

Was for me too. I had no idea whatsoever how to use it.

Then I went on Google, searched 'Blender tutorial' and then figured it out in 5 mins, tops.

Do either of those programs have all the exporting formats that MS3D has? I don't think so.

Many people (myself included) own a copy of MilkShape 3D purely for the exporting formats. For Game media creation, Milkshape is great. If you can manage to get past the insane UI for Blender, then it has a lot to offer as well.

This subject is as difficult as people are diverse....you won't get a definitive answer....ever.

And since we're showing off other people's work in our prescribed applications; here's one done by Breech Block at the TS Forums:

Here's the thread about it:

If you just want to learn some basics first, If we are talking ease of use for a beginner, bryce, then after that wings 3d, then from those 2 go on to the bought tools, bryce did 5.5 for free, and wings is free as well, also sketch up may also be good for a beginner as well, so perhaps try that after bryce and wings 3d. Now these are the easiest roots to go, pick up bryce first as you will have a rendered scenes within the day, then once you have had fun with that, go to wings and have a p[lay at modeling, once you have these two you will have some basic skills, and you will of had some fun. This is the simplest route for a beginner, regardless of what other packages are named, this is the quickest route for a beginner who wants to learn and have something to show along the way, what you pick after these programs is up to you.
If you dont have the basics, you wont be able to make a character or gun if you have not done any 3d before, so its best to walk before you can run.

Also doesnt this thread need moving to 3d chat, not the fpsc models

I'd reccomend XSI Softimage, but it's too expensive, I have a demo version. It's easy to use and very powerful. But I have problems texturing, since I'm a noob, can someone tell me where to find some free good tutorials for texturing and UV-mapping in XSI? I've made some veryo good weapon models with it, and saved them in x format before the trial finished, then continued in milkshape.

I really think that its hard to really give you a recommendation because theres alot of them but theres only one that you will like and that is easy for you to understand. for me blender is hard even with the tutorials really because i wasnt paying attention lol. but Milkshape 3d is really good i like it get the trial of it and just keep trying untell you find one that you understand and like.

good luck

Well I have Maya but I don't know a thing about it I tried to do some stuff in it but I don't understand a thing in it.
I never actually used Milk Shape so cant say anything about that
Used blender for a day on the school computers and had a lot of fun making practical effects but cant use it on my computer ( it dose not like the graphics card ATI something something something )
Useing a bit of google sketchup at school and stuff but cant do anything at home because i have no idea what to make in it ( made a house once ).
So that's basicly it.
I don't have any experience on making models i am lazy by nature.
