i hope this is the right board for this, but i spent hours making a water decal the other day and i had downloaded decal maker, but then i found out tha it wouldnt work. so i went to the ol' ocfpsc guide and found the section on decal making. but it says to alpha map it. Now may i ask what in the world alpha mapping is and how you do it?thx

Alpha is a special channel, You have Red, Green and Blue. And the Alpha.
It works like this:
if you paint the alphachannel:
White - No transperancy
Completely black - Makes the texture invisible
Somewere between (gery) - semi transperant (you can still see the texture, but you can also see trough.

I hope it helped a bit.

P.S. You can use Gimp or any other good photomanipulation software to edit the alpha.

Lets say you want a bottle.
You could have it just white(or green or whatever a bottle is coloured), or you could add an alpha channel to it.
Make the stickers (the one with text etc) part white in the alpha, and the glass part of it grey in the alpha.
Now you got a pretty realistic bottle

This also works for windows, water or ghost characters

Use photoshop to create your decals or some other proggy that supports 32 bit TGA, make sure that you start with a new image with a full transparent background place only the moving elements onto this background and then save it as a 32 bit TGA.

e.g. Look in files/gamecore/decals open the decal.dds with DDS converter 2 or use the Nvidia tools in photoshop,.

You will notice that the decals have a black background this is not actually the colour black but the alpha layer with full transparency so make sure you dont include the colour black when creating your decals.

The difference between the dds file and a TGA file is that dds is 32bits per channel with four channels and the TGA is 8 bits per channel with four channels, yes its a complicated subject but just try the first part of this post

This should get you started, if you know how to use the image progs if not then there is a lot more that you need to learn.

cheers

I have just had a quick search on the forum and I can see that there is a need for a complete explanation of rgba and what constitutes a 16.7 million colour image with alpha.

there just has to be light at the end of the tunnel, even if its only a birthday candle....and cake!

On the gimp 2.6 (that is what I have):
1 Open your image
2 click on Layer/Transparency/Add Alpha Channel and that's it.
3 then save it .tga format
