I see no problem in someone/anyone making a request. Simply put REQUEST in the subject line. For example,

Subject: [REQUEST] How to make a NPC jump

Those that don't like request threads can easily skip over it. It would also help if posters used [TUTORIAL] (if they've made or found one) and [HELP] (if someone is working on a script and is stuck) in the subject line of the thread.

I enjoy reading request threads. Its like a puzzle and I enjoy solving puzzles. I also enjoy helping people. Finally, I hate spending 4 hours banging my head against the computer trying to get from a concept to script. It would be nice to "feel comfortable" posting a request and having the chance that someone will reply with a certain keyword or point out a tutorial or a subsection of the manual that covers it. I've read the manual. I've spend hours searching and reading through threads. It can be quite confusing and overwhelming sometimes. It never hurts to ask for help. Save yourself some of the headache.

If the mods and vet posters still feel outraged at the concept of threads that make a REQUEST then maybe they could be so kind as to make a new Board / Forum titled........................Requests......................so that me and the other noobs have a place to play. A place that welcomes all requests, for scripts, models, tutorials, animation code, and ....................

In a perfect world where people post [REQUEST], [HELP], and [TUTORIAL], we would not be having this conversation. Unfortunately, people do not. They post "Hey, WTH!" and "It don't work!". Even though the stickies clearly say not to, that you should make a clear and meaningful title to your post. I know it's hard to believe, but people will even make threads about the rules!

The "NO REQUESTS" rule was not instituted overnight. It came after many, many months of attempting to instruct people to at least try to learn, to post their attempts so they could be discussed and corrected. But alas, it was not to be.

Instead what happened time and time again, was that "Can someone make me a script - I don't want to learn how to do it." or "I don't have time." It would be nice if we could all just get along, but for every person who wants someone to do something for them, there is a person who wants them to try it themselves. Who is right and who is wrong?

Some people, willing to learn and help themselves, try to learn scripting and need help to get over the rough spots. They start a conversation thread to accomplish a certain objective. Others are very generous, and take the time write a detailed tutorial to help others. A day later, their post has been pushed on to the second page, and what's visible is a list of script requests from people who just want someone to do it for them.

How many people don't read the stickies? How many people will ask a question without searching, a question that was answered one post above theirs, simply because they don't want to take the time to look?

No, the rule was a necessary step to keep the forum clean, and useful, to be respectful to those who respect others. It allows a mod to simply lock or delete a post so that it doesn't keep pushing important posts to the next page.

Best.

Brian in Atlanta is on target. We all try hard to help others who we see are trying to help themselves. Sometimes I will provide a simple script -- but I'm not on the forums that often nor have the time to always provide a script or even help. For those who don't have it you might want to check out FPI EditPad. I think it can be useful for learning how to script.

Er... anyway, on subject....

Requests were fine for a while, when they were kept in moderation. I used to be the one who came in and fulfilled requests all the time. It's how I learned to script, but then there came a point where people started to EXPECT the script to be done for them overnight. And it wasn't complicated things like "How do I get my lights to turn on like warehouse lights do", it was simple things that they probably could have figured out on their own if they had taken a couple glances at the tutorials.

After a couple weeks of trying to tell people that they should learn how to script since it would not only save them time but it'd help them to make their games better... I got fed up and made that post about this not being a request board and apparently it became a rule.

[EDIT]

xplosys is right on track here. Even if they were allowed to make requests if they put it in the thread title.... that would just cause more work for the Mods for the people who DON'T read stickys and don't put it in.

A new board specifically for requests would be nice.... but I doubt very many people would poke in to help people out...

[/EDIT]

[EDIT2]

I don't even know why this is a problem right now... we already have TWO threads our scripters have made saying that THEY WILL TAKE REQUESTS. Go post your request in their thread.

[/EDIT2]

This is a very interesting subject.

Brian In Korea, I once, a couple years ago, thought we should have [X9] or [X10] in our W.I.P. threads and our Showcase threads. Sure enough, it's enforced now.

The only problem with your idea, is that Fpsc forums seem to get quite a few newbies, and it may do no good. You never know. No one that is new ever seems to read the rules, like, ever, so.....

Maybe in the near future, the forums may condone this new law.

Till Thy Migration Come...
