Good to know @VanB.

@Ron: I used to have a deviantArt account but I found that place to be a bit too flooded with ...childishness and negativity.

I do however have an online gallery. LINK (contains mild nudity)

Hey, your portraits are too awesome.
I'd love to do more drawings, but time is something I cannot afford anymore. I'm afraid I'll get rusty When Winter hits I'll go a buy a new sketchbook, 2h-7b pencils (I like it dark) and some coloured pencils.

I've never used colour pencils before and I think I need more colour.
Can anyone share some decent brands?

Digital work just isn't for me.
I have so many images in my head I just can't wait to let it all out!

Well, here's a question for y'all just because and if this is an art showcase where is the discussion? ... What kind of environment do you find you're the most creative when drawing/painting/sculpting/what not? Do you like dark or bright rooms? Do you listen to music? If so, does it effect/reflect your mood and does that effect your art? Comfy chairs or stools? Big desks or simple tables? Studio or Bedroom?

I'd like to start some kind of discussion. Music is a big part in what I do, I cannot do something without a tune. I like my desk in my bedroom. It is right next to a window where it lets in lots of light in the morning/early afternoon. I keep it open to get a refreshing breeze. Just that natural comfort when sketching listening to metal just makes me so relaxed. I mostly gesture out figures doing something. My anatomy is terrible. But with this environment I can dish out a very nice pencil landscape every now and then. I feel better drawing with the comfort of winter, that's when I'm at my peak. That is what I can't wait for. Plus my schedule is clear during the cold months.

So there is my part, probably not good enough. It's very late and I'm tired and I'm just writing the first things that pop into my head.

@Nerevar
Thanks for the replay
I have the same problem ,to short in time.

I have my drawing board in the living room, like the atmosphere there.
Most of the time i make the fast sketches in a sketchbook in the evening.
At daylight i make the drawings from these little studies you have seen here.

I never have music playing, strangely because i like to listen to music
I must try that

Im curious what you are going to make'
I am working on a portrait of Richard Attenborough.

Greetings

Ron.

So it took me five months to do another painting. Finally sat down and banged out something I'd been thinking about for a while.

Like the feeling of depth you have created with the dark trees at front
Do you make these great works on the computer or on canvas.

Your use of colors, light and perspective is perfect, love it

Great to see you here again

Try to get Nerevar's kind of discussion alive.
It's interesting to hear how people like to work

Hope too finish my new drawing soon

Thanks RonsWare, looking forward to your new drawing too

The environment I usually work in my office, during the day. I like to keep it light and open, and I always listen to music. There are several "go to" albums that I always put on repeat when I need to get things done. For the last 2 years it has been the Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis. That OST gives me so many ideas!

As for tools, I still use my old graphire 2 for way back, which is actually getting too old. Can't draw a straight line without it jumping around all over the place. It's sort of forced my hand to get into more geometric shapes, which I don't mind. I actually use the polygonal lasso tool to block in most of the shapes for a composition before painting over those.

I spent about 4 hours on that painting, which was a nice amount for what I did. I always start with a really simple pencil thumbnail (this one was done on a whiteboard), so I have a really good idea of the composition. Most of the time I'll sketch in photoshop and adjust the canvas size and composition till I have it exactly how I want it. I find the canvas size really affects the mood, but that's more of a composition thing. I like the feeling of open spaces that no-one inhabits, the imposition of humanity on sacred nature or something like that. The dark foreground and strong vertical lines are intended to feel a bit like sentinels, eyes watching from nature quietly as the spacecraft intrudes on it's reverie.

There's a dump of thoughts!!

Nice work as always Greenlig. Your style is very well done, especially the overall composition of your pieces!

I think I'd like to add to this discussion. If you don't mind of course. Reading some responses was strangely interesting to me.

When did you discover art?

To break it down:
When did you take interest in art?
What kind of things did you start out with?
What things did you try?
Classes when younger?
Art as a hobby vs. art as profession?

To start (Again). I first discovered art way back when I was a wee lad in elementary. My fellow peers and art teachers always said I was good. I would always doodle out little comic books during class. I made up characters based off everyday objects and foods like "Dr. Deodorant vs. The Evil Stench" (dirty sock)and "Titanium Toaster and the Toast Twins" and so on. I would always get in trouble for doing this instead of my work, but now when I visit some of my old teachers they'd say that I was always creative.

Years ahead, I think when I was 10 or so, maybe 9, I took a ceramic class at an art center far away. A once a week class where we learn the basics of clay sculpting and pottery. On break we would head upstairs to the break room and that's where the comic design class was. So instantly I signed up for that class for the next month. In that class I learned a tiny bit about storyboarding, figures, flip books, and every now and then we watched some old cartoons and epic anime movies (Castle in the Sky, Valley of the Winds, and Spirited Away). Months after that I took a mixed media class and a car drawing class, they weren't as memorable to me as the other two.

I really could go on, but I'm not gonna write an auto-biography.
TO SKIP AHEAD...

For years I put art down. To the point where I never thought of even putting a smiley face on my paper. It wasn't until recently, the summer of 2012 when I was just sitting there looking at the Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and I gazed at concept art and alpha footage (which is way cooler than what it became now) and I thought *Damn, I'm sure I can draw cool battle scenes like that*.
And that's when it hit. In the morning I went out and bought a cheap Art1st sketch pad and I spent that entire night watching Sycra and Draw with Jazza on Youtube and just drew.

It was only a month before I produced my first full blown pencil drawing of an Ordinator from Morrowind, which I posted here but it's lost in one of the pages of this thread. Looking back at it now, I am way past at what I was. My proportions were way off, my lines were ugly, shading was crap, unbalanced, and flat. I've gotten seriously better. Winter 2012-2013, I dual-rolled a college basic drawing class and that was when improvement hit. Even today I have a long way to go and the thing that stops me now is a busy schedule.
I just cannot wait to open my new, higher quality sketchbook and get lost in it. My mind has been so full lately, only getting fuller as I keep putting media in it.

Also, I saw Prismacolor Primier Colored Pencils on sale for $15.
Excited to crack that baby open!

I hope my post isn't unbearably long I just think this showcase needed more than just compliments and critiques. A buzzing back story from the old masters to the budding doodlers.

There's some really good work on here.

But I thought I'd bring this down to amateur hour and share these robot sketches I did at lunch time today.

All these were drawn on a Nexus 10 using Sketchbook Express by Autodesk.

Speaking of uploading. I broke my promise...
Anyway, finishing this semester's Advanced Drawing class, I just have to find a way to take photos of my work and put them on here.
Lots of pastel stuff. I love dry mediums.

Also, I'm having a bit of trouble with the surrealism in this class. It's about creating illogical images capturing a sub-conscious thought, right?
Wolf, I know you know surrealism based on your works, can you give me a couple of pointers?

Okay, gonna dump all the work I've done so far in the class I'm taking. Feel free to share your thoughts and please excuse the crappy phone camera quality. Also I took these things into Gimp to touch them up a bit to restore their original colors and such to the best I can.

1. Still Life- Flowers

This was done with dry pastels and on charcoal paper.
Enjoy!

2. Still Life - Toys

This is dry pastels on grey (Gray?.... Grae.) Charcoal Paper.

This was a fun one, took forever my instructor said, but hey... can't rush art right?

3. Model Drawing - Colored Contour

Here's an interesting one. Felt bad for the model who had to sit for 3 hours straight in my Advanced Drawing class.

First, a quick gesture drawing.
Then, a contour drawing on top of that.
Then I had to shade it with pencils.
And finally using pastels to add the colors.

Sounds shorter that what it actually took.

4. Figure Drawing Experiment

This one really impressed my professor. He says my proportions are extremely good. Oh his expression when I told him I was self taught with figure drawing. Really made my day.
Pastel on American Drawing Paper.

The smudges in the background were part of an experiment that didn't turn out so well. Basically I start with a 30 minute pose, erase that, put another 30 minute pose, erase that, and then a 90 minute pose as the final pose. Supposed to give a motion feel. I guess pastels can't do that.

5. Surrealism - Simple Candle Underwater

The first part of the lesson in surrealism. I think I did it okay.

A range of pencils from 4b to 2H on a 14 x 11 sketch paper.

There's my dump. If I can scrounge up some small doodles that I did during the business class I took, I'll put those somewhere too.

I'll say one thing Scraggle, the final day working on that one, I could of swore those toys were looking at me.
Spoopy...

Ronsware, I absolutely love your portraits. There is so much life in them! Not sure how you do it.

Speaking of which, I recently did a couple of self portraits of my own for that class. One is a realistic one done in soft pastels and the other is a surrealistic one done using colored pencils for the first time.

I'll post them when I get the chance.
