I think I'd like to add to this discussion. If you don't mind of course. Reading some responses was strangely interesting to me.
When did you discover art?

Art as a hobby vs. art as profession?
To start (Again). I first discovered art way back when I was a wee lad in elementary. My fellow peers and art teachers always said I was good. I would always doodle out little comic books during class. I made up characters based off everyday objects and foods like "Dr. Deodorant vs. The Evil Stench" (dirty sock)and "Titanium Toaster and the Toast Twins" and so on. I would always get in trouble for doing this instead of my work, but now when I visit some of my old teachers they'd say that I was always creative.
Years ahead, I think when I was 10 or so, maybe 9, I took a ceramic class at an art center far away. A once a week class where we learn the basics of clay sculpting and pottery. On break we would head upstairs to the break room and that's where the comic design class was. So instantly I signed up for that class for the next month. In that class I learned a tiny bit about storyboarding, figures, flip books, and every now and then we watched some old cartoons and epic anime movies (Castle in the Sky, Valley of the Winds, and Spirited Away). Months after that I took a mixed media class and a car drawing class, they weren't as memorable to me as the other two.
I really could go on, but I'm not gonna write an auto-biography.
TO SKIP AHEAD...
For years I put art down. To the point where I never thought of even putting a smiley face on my paper. It wasn't until recently, the summer of 2012 when I was just sitting there looking at the Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and I gazed at concept art and alpha footage (which is way cooler than what it became now) and I thought *Damn, I'm sure I can draw cool battle scenes like that*.
And that's when it hit. In the morning I went out and bought a cheap Art1st sketch pad and I spent that entire night watching Sycra and Draw with Jazza on Youtube and just drew.
It was only a month before I produced my first full blown pencil drawing of an Ordinator from Morrowind, which I posted here but it's lost in one of the pages of this thread. Looking back at it now, I am way past at what I was. My proportions were way off, my lines were ugly, shading was crap, unbalanced, and flat. I've gotten seriously better. Winter 2012-2013, I dual-rolled a college basic drawing class and that was when improvement hit. Even today I have a long way to go and the thing that stops me now is a busy schedule.
I just cannot wait to open my new, higher quality sketchbook and get lost in it. My mind has been so full lately, only getting fuller as I keep putting media in it.
Also, I saw Prismacolor Primier Colored Pencils on sale for $15.
