I am learning myself at how to conduct a "contest" and I have already blown it. Just like anything else; most of the time we learn by trial and error. There will be a lot of that with this contest "project." I am revising this first post to include everything that is of importance. At least I hope so.

**************************************************

The idea behind this contest "project" is to script something that will do a specific action. I will not show you what I have scripted. You will simply see an action that takes place and along with it a short description. Then you will need to create your own script to make that action happen. It does not have to be exactly as I have scripted it. Just as long as it does what it is supposed to do.

I want to make sure that this can be done so I am using something I have already done. You will see that it may not be as easy as you think.

Click here to download the AVI (560 Kb) to use as an example of what needs to happen and what the end result should look and sound like.

Again, the sounds have to sound exactly like the AVI. These are sounds that are stock. A scifi door needs to open and then close and the sound of a lift going down follows. The first floor door needs to open and the character needs to walk to the player.

The timing of some of the sounds is not important as long as they are realistic in that regard.

If you can't download a large file such as the AVI then click here to he download an mp3 of the sounds taken from the AVI.

Also the following are screenies:

The first is the player waiting as he hears the footsteps, door, and lift sounds.

This image is of the door opening and ally walking out of lift.

The following image is the ally walking towards the player.

And the ally standing before the player.

Finally, click here to download the map (fpm) file to use for this project.

After completing the script(s) -- likely more than one. You will need to send the revised fpm along with the scripts to my email link. Please let me know where the scripts should go within the scriptbank. Post that you are sending it and then send the email. (I will not use your email address for spam or anything else). I have tested the email link and it works.

The first three people who sends me a working script that sounds and looks like the version in the download will win:

1st - 400 store points
2nd - 200 store points
3rd - 100 store points

Again the scripts are not that large for this contest and you may wonder if I should have called this a scripting contest. I am just testing the waters with this one. It is not necessarily for beginners but I hope you will try to at least think about it. Hopefully it will make everyone think outside of the box and see that sometimes in order to get something that works in FPSC might need a work-a-round.

Addendum:

One thing I had not been able to do is tweak the character walking out of the lift. He looks pretty spastic and almost trips over the lift door.

If anyone is able to get a character to walk through the door smoothly, I might consider giving you bonus points whether you are in 1st, 2nd or 3rd.

what do you mean duplicate something you've done?
if we just make up our own scripts i would enter, but i'm not trying to 'duplicate' someones work.

Well General Jackson that is up to you.

The idea behind this is to script something that will do a specific thing. I will not show you what I have scripted. You will simply see an action that takes place and along with it a short description. Then you will need to create your own script to make that action happen. I want to make sure that this can be done so I am using something I have already done. You will see that it may not be as easy as you think. Or, again this first one might be pretty easy.

Welcome Arenas, djmaster and hockeykid.

When a person works for a software or game development company as a programmer, you will be given an assignment for a portion of the program or game to write. This always consists of a written description of what needs to be programmed. In game development, you will probably have a "story board" as to what it should look and/or sound like. I could produce a story board for this but since I am using something I have already created I will provide a video. However, I might also provide a story board to help.

So, this is an example of how one would work for a larger company.

Also, I am hoping that this will help people learn to script. The winning script along with mine will be shown for others who had been working on it can see how it was scripted. Examples are always good learning tools.

I'll give the specifics tomorrow. I don't have the story board made up or the specs on what you will need to do. I had to fix FPI EditPad and finish level 2 of my game. That is all done now and will get crackin' on this project. I also need to purchase some store points for the prizes and let Rick know. Haven't decided the amounts yet.

One of the qualifications to actually win a prize is to have a store account.

@General Jackson

I understand your thinking. But how would I judge the script? That is way too subjective. Maybe a later contest and when I have time to think about it; but, I'm going forward with this one.

And, again, I'm doing this as of educational value because in real life you just can't program what you want to but what you are told to program and then be able to have the ability to come up with a solution. Arenas, don't back out because of that statement as this is also a way to learn how to script.

The last larger company I worked for, I had to write looooong reports on the things I programmed. Regression Test steps, UT reports, etc. Bleehhhhh

Well, I'll check back tomorrow to see what the objective is.
I'm in if you'll let me.

Plystire, I don't know. What do others think? There are not too many who are interested in doing this so perhaps . . . ?

Addendum:

Actually I'm a little bummed out. There's not much interest in this. I'm not sure I want to spend any of my money for prizes when there doesn't seem to be much interest. I do appreciate the four or five who are really interested. There has been around 120 views so it's not like they were the only ones who knows about it. I was hoping to attract some who are not the usual group. This did attract Arenas though.

I'd be interested in doing this. I'm not plugged in on the weekends, so I didn't see this until today.

And looking at the responses, I get the feeling that people are confused as to what the contest is about. I realize that you want to give an assignment and have people do it. Great - no problem. But I think people are a little wary of entering not knowing what the exact script is supposed to do, nor do they care for entering a contest where only the first correct submission wins. I realize that you don't have time to do the "let me look at the entries and pick the sexiest or most clever winner" thing. But to just disregard all entries after the 1st correct one is what's turning people off (IMHO).

I suppose it's only fair to let Ply join, hes a scripter to, tho he is the best (I feared this would happen =p). I didn't think I had that much of a chance once I saw that hockey entered =p

Question though, I assume this must be done in stock FPSC?

I'm not going to take any time in writing a description or making a story board. The "story board" will just be the AVI capture that I took. I hope all are able to download a 795 KB file.

There is actually not much scripting to be done for this one. Scripting is very important to creating a good scene, level, or game but using one's ingenuity is also very important. You may have to use two or three scripts depending on what logic you come up with for duplicating this.

I am providing the map and it is all stock. Click the download button to get the map (fpm).

Important

You will have to make a couple of minor additions and/or revisions to the map. For example, you will need a character entity of course.

The AVI will be available in the next post.

You will need to send the revised fpm along with the scripts to my email link. Please post that you are sending it and then send the email. (I will not use your email address for spam or anything else). I have tested the email link and it works.

The first three people who sends me a working script that sounds and looks like the version in the download will win:

1st - 400 store points
2nd - 200 store points
3rd - 100 store points

Again the scripts are not that large for this contest and you may wonder if I should have called a scripting contest. I am just testing the waters with this one. It is for beginners and hopefully it will make you think beyond the box.

A short description (Edited):

You, the player is waiting to meet an ally. He is on the second floor and you now hear footsteps moving towards the lift. You then hear the door open and close and then you hear the lift move down to the first floor where the lift door opens and the ally walks out of the lift and directly in front of you -- the player. The character needs to walk up to the player.

Perhaps if more competition were to enter, it may be more viable that I enter midway or something.

You will probably need to do some trial and error and tweaking. This is probably something that cannot be coded without some testing.

Is anybody having any trouble downloading the video to see and hear what this is to look and hear like?

meteorite, got your email. Will look at it as soon as I finish with this post.

I had received one earlier and I have to reject it. Will tell them also when I get done here.

I have to reiterate the following:

"The first three people who sends me a working script that sounds and looks like the version in the download will win . . ."

It has to sound exactly like the footsteps, a scifi door opening and closing, the lift going down. Also, the character needs to walk to the player.

The timing of some of the sounds is not important as long as they are realistic in that regard.

Click on the download button to download an mp3 of the sounds that need to be there.

Hockeykid and meteorite have submitted but neither are like the AVI I have provided. This is why I wanted to provide a video because it shows that it can be done in that manner.

@The Fps Creator rocks!

I'm sorry I have caused some confusion with this contest as my posts have been all over the place. If I do this again, I will make sure everything that needs to be there is in the first post.

Please re-read the first post. Then, if you still have questions please ask.

@djmaster
Using FPI EditPad does not guarantee that your logic is correct. Only if the commands are used in the right place (condition or action) and are valid. You may have to rethink how you scripted it and change the logic.

@hockeykid and meteorite
Don't give up. You too may have to either rethink the logic used or rework the script you had already used.

I'm not sure what you mean by my sound? I haven't provided any sound to use. All the sounds are stock sounds.

Addendum:

I did provide an mp3 of the sounds heard in the AVI video. That includes the footsteps, the door opening and closing and the lift going down and then the 1st floor door opening.

His scripts and logic for this are much different from mine.

Yes I will post all the scripts including mine. This is a good way to learn. Mine is not necessarily any better than yours.

Remember, before look at hockeykid's entry, I had said that the timing of the sounds does not have to match mine. Click on the download button to download the AVI (615 Kb) of hockeykid's entry.

If I were the team leader and this was for real, I would probably want the footsteps to sound like a more normal gate. He's still dragging his feet, hockeykid. I remember my mom would always tell me, "Don't drag your feet!"

Also, the character walks a little too fast to the player. He apparently was dragging his feet to get to the elevator but was rushing towards the player as if he was a long lost relative. But then again, maybe he should be shown as going at a faster clip to show his enthusiasm. However, the footsteps on the 2nd floor should match that clip.

Actually, I didn't use a sound for the footsteps. I did it a different way. Since there already is a 1st place winner, I will direct you to the walking sounds.

by the way are you sure the video you uploaded was using my script? it looked like exactly like your other video. Maybe a video mix up?

I thought it was. I will double check. I deleted the download for now until I check it out.

Addendum:

That was the right one. Remember, the timer is in milliseconds. 1 second = 1000 milliseconds.

@Plystire,

Only if it seems everybody has given up. I would like as many as possible to learn something from this.

@meteorite
I hope you haven't given up and are still working on it.

@Everybody Else
I hope everybody else is thinking on this project and is trying to do some coding. Also, I am willing to start giving out tips after 2nd place is taken. As important as winning is that of learning.

Created my script. Gotta test

I can't texture. I'm not an artist.
