Hi to all,

By any chance would anyone here have a possible idea on how to create what is basically a flare - a light source attached to a grenade-type object, but rather than explodes, it ignites and gives off light for a short duration (couple of minutes).

This would be an excellent addition for usage with maps that have very dark areas - i know i could take the option of night vision goggles, this would simply be more preferrable for my concept

thanks for any help provided!

Well, this goes right to the heart of the whole flashlight concept (IMHO). I haven't seen anything new come out, so I believe the issue is still that we don't have a "true" flashlight yet; all flashlights are still simulated with dynamic lights being turned on or off on/over/near specific objects. A true flashlight would be that the light comes on near the player and moves with them lighting up objects that the players is focused on.

I had an idea using Ply's mod a while back to bind a dynamic light source to the camera. I never got it to work, and after a while I got involved in other projects and never got back to working on it. I am not sure if this same principle would work for setting up a flare, though.

You could, alternatively, have the flares already pre-set as to where the player will need to use them, and then the player just activates them and the lights come on. Have you tried this?

@Ply: Did you ever get a chance to try and get the BINDENTITYTOCAM function to work with a dynamic light? Like I said above, I tried and couldn't get it to work, but it's your mod, so maybe you had better luck?

Ahh, I see,

It is a shame - im assuming this is some kind of engine flaw? i have always like a hard-point system with directional/dynamic lighting.

By any chance, does the development team of FPSC take any cues from the community? because lighting can be a very big thing in the atmosphere within a game.

Binding an entity to a camera crashes the game for me...
Have you looked at a flashlight script?

all it actually does is makes a hud of a dark outer appear and turns the ambience up, so all you can see is the lit inside, and when you turn it off the hud goes away and it sets the ambience back down

@Leon Kennedy:

No I hadn't thought of that.

I'll look into it when I have time, I'm right now trying to make the Mod as stable as I can.

@meteorite:

Binding an entity to a camera only works for the player camera (Camera 0). If that's crashing for you, shoot me an email with what you're doing and I'll look into it. Last time I played with it, the binding worked fine and I even fixed some of the rotation problems I had with it before.

The EFX developers have now implemented a flashlight in FPSC. Check out this video, wait for EFX 2009 to be released then your sorted.
