Either way, I like them, there looking good so-far!
But on the last two of the first set of images you shown us, I see some cutting off, you may want to fix that up just by erasing them bits out...

From the looks of it, I'll say he used a brush on a canvas of 512^2 on a Pure black backround, then used a tool such as signs to create a transparent sign with the texture on.
