First, you have to be a good programmer and know what consumers want. Usually they want replay value, something that will keep them interested in your game for years to come. This could include a ton of secrets in your game, unlockable minigames, and other such things, like a high score table. Nice, well laid-out levels are something they crave as well, or at least I do. I hate games where the levels are not well thought out and obviously didn't have much time put into the design. Other elements include a well thought-out story line and awesome characters. Music is also important, and don't use copyrighted material of any kind if you plan to sell.

Now, I have to ask: do you want to make a game and sell it? It sounds as if you're just asking other DBC users what they do to sell. Either way, you put a lot of work into making and selling a good game. Also what helps is having your own website where you showcase a lot of screen shots, some forums for tips on your game (or an FAQ, as forums are hard to start), and information on exactly who your company is.

Yesiree, it takes a LOT of work.

More along the lines of not gonna happen. If you really want to make a profit from the games you make you should either get advertisers (like in many flash games out there) or make a top of the line game (like world of goo), but for that you'd need a proper education.
Dark Basic is a very good basis though

HA! it is very very very possible! there was a game uggghhhh can't remember the name now(didn't hve money to buy at the time) but it was made with dbc and it is a space game.... it is sold online and is very well made(i got the demo) dang i can't remember. and yes the graphics are kinda low but. think about it, Mario was released for the gameboy years ago and look at what we have now! hahaha. but it is possible to make things look like they hve tons more graphics, take a look at latch's Lightmapping post just that makes the level look great!

yes it's very hard work. and you have to have patients and stick with one thing for a long time. but in the end something amazing comes out!

to really answer the question:

Tons of things, RPGs, FPS's,Third Person, Birds Eye, Sidescroller,
2d Birds Eye. anything. somethings take more time to make with db but in my oppinion learning the hard way around is more fun (and better for you) then just learning the quick way first.

what genre was it?

that's a handheld and thus not the same. making a game with today's standards in dbc is impossible.

All you gotta be is good at making the product. DB uses DirectX and dirextx in terms of models/polygons is the same - an earlier version mid you - so the bells and whistles of lighting and shading aren't readily avaiable unless you find ways simulate them with techniques such as light mapping, pre-rendering, layering, etc.

Check out these 2 QUALITY, DBC made, profit making game series:

Star Wraith

Last Half of Darkness

Enjoy your day.

DB is no way to make a fast buck.
seing as you only joined two months ago it concerns me that you are already thinking about making money from it.
Do you have the skill to make anything people would pay money for? That's the only question you need to ask yourself. If you can then with hard work you could make some money but don't expect to become a millionaire.

I remember when I first joined I thought I'd be able to make an Uber-cool RPG adventure with an enemy combat system and awesome animated bunny rabbits.

What? Is that weird?

Anyway, don't expect to be able to make an uber awesome game that easily. I can't even make a simple level editor yet, and that's required for most games.

thecomet actually has a good point.
If you want lots of people to play your game make it simple; lots of people are simple.

Its true, it seems like lately a lot of games have proven that game popularity is proportional to the game's wtf factor.
