I've really outdone myself this time.

SkyCars 1.10 is now completed and waiting for players. There are so many new features, it's practically a whole new game!

*Score system implemented. Challenge your friends to beat your high scores!
*Purchase new vehicles, each with distinct advantages, by earning points.
*Level format greatly expanded! Now there are 8 height levels, tons of new objects, easily-controlled render modes, and more!
*Stereo sound implemented.
*Fixed music restarting lag.
*New version of SkyEdit released, plus a converter so that you can load up old levels.
*Tons of game optimizations and cleanups.
*In-game pause screen & menu system: restart track, leave track (to menu), and quit game.
*Jump pads.
*Clipping blocks.
*New levels!!! Please replay them all; some are greatly different than before.

Finally, Sky Cars v1.10! Great game, great music, great graphics, now the only thing I want great is my skills so I could actually beat a track! Keep it up. Hey, do you have any news about those 2 other cars that it says not in the demo version? What are they? Do you have any pics?

Skycars is great! We have so many road works in our area that I am waiting for someone to design a hopping car to jump barriers, and holes in the road. The game is fun to play, I wish you could steer the car whilst it is in mid-jump.

Thank you everybody! I'm glad the game is being enjoyed so far.

Car stats: They're there, believe me. Each car has its own distinct stats. For example, the Mongoose has great acceleration and a high top speed, but terrible traction. The Stingray is a very solid car with great traction and a good maneuverability.

David89: Sounds interesting! I'll be checking that out...

NWC Omega: I actually don't have any new cars yet to fill those spots. I do have some good ideas though as to what they'll be, but I'm going to leave that a mystery for now.

Pincho: Sounds like a great place to live heh. You can steer the car in mid air to a limited degree. Within the first second, it's possible to modify the course of jump signifigantly, but it trails off into very little/no control as your jump progresses.

Uh oh, another problem. When I go to run the new sky edit, it give me an error. So dont expect any levels from me until I (or maybe you, maybe the exe is corrupted or something) fix it.

Thanks for notifying me. The file must have been corrupted when I uploaded it, as I got an error message downloading it too. I re-uploaded it and then tested it, and it seems to be working fine now.

Ok, to make things confusing for those who already downloaded, I just uploaded a new version of SkyCars 1.10. I kept the same name because I don't think enough people downloaded the old version to constitute a new version number.

Anyhow, I did some cool things:

Removed the last traces of redundant texture loading. This improvement will be noticable in the main menu, track, and car selection screens.

Increased the game speed just a tad so it plays like SkyCars 1.0

Changed the different cars' variables a bit. The SkyCar is a little more responsive, the Mongoose has a little less air control, and the Stingray now has great air control.

So download now!

Man I must give you tons of creadit
this game is so old it remind the "simple times"
I just couldn't stop playing this.
Great job on the remaking of this game.

Plus I got 2 questions:
1. When I got out of this game my computer got
stuck so is it a bug or it could be something in me computer?
2. Did you build it in DBC or DBPro?

I can probably answer those questions:

1) Yeah, probably your computer. Runs perfect on my end (just wish the editor would work)

2) He made it in Dark Basic Classic. He's currently saving up for Pro, so he can make Sky Worlds in it.

@ Renegade, thanks for the compliments. Yeah, it brings up quite a bit of nostalgia for me too, especially programming it. Ah, the good ol' days!

@ Renegade and NWC Omega: Thanks for answering his questions. That seems about right to me regarding both questions.

@ Omega: Please check out my reply on the GalaxyWare forums...

Nice

You're probably the 2nd best SkyCars player, myself being the first of course. But can you beat my score on Earth 1 of 166 with the Mongoose?

The only way to get a really high score is to hit practically every possible score ring and die as seldomly as possible. Going fast helps too.

Nice

The only real problem I have is that it is too dark. I can hardly see the road ahead of me, and sometimes I bump into walls invisible against the space background.

Other than that, great game!

I'll try that. But I shouldn't have to change my system settings just to play a game.

No, you shouldn't. I designed earth to be a little dark, just as it was in SkyRoads. I think the game has a good balance of contrast overall, just don't expect it to look perfect if your monitor is facing a window or bright lights.

You can alter the darkness caused by distance fog by increasing the max viewable distance in the Settings menu.

Yeah I figured it out. Looks ok now.

Its really fun. The only downside that I see now is the loading time. It takes forever, but I guess that really cant be avoided. At least you get to listen to that great music.

Well, glad things are working better now.

Loading time is a bit on the high side, but I don't think this can be controlled. Fortunately, most things only have to be loaded once: all the textures once loaded never have to be loaded again until you restart the program.

Here's a suggestion, Final EXE's tend to get screwed up when unzipped on my computer, so if you dont include the media in the EXE, it might work when I unzip it.

Edit:The image tag doesnt want me to post images anymore, so just copy and paste the link to see the error message I got with the test program.

CoDer: I'm glad to hear this! Always good to know people enjoy your game.

Omega: That's exactly what I needed to hear. I've narrowed down your problem. SkyEdit runs in a window, but your system doesn't support that display mode under DX in a window. I'm guessing you have an old video card. I'll re-release SkyEdit soon with a startup flag that lets you run in fullscreen.

Ok, I patched up SkyEdit. Redownload it and read the included instructions on how to change display and window modes.

Speaking of SkyEdit, I'm surprised that nobody else has created any new levels yet! I'd really like to see some of the cool things all of you can do with the new level format and new blocks. Join the friendly neighborhood SkyCars community!

Perhaps this is a sily question, but did you run the program in fullscreen and/or different color depths this time?

EDIT:
Lemme know if the problem persists after you get over 4mb of video memory.

A few cool things to look out for now:

Helix, fellow DB'er, is writing a custom level pack with some fantastic levels! Some are even better than the original levels, so go support him and download them.

Also, keep an eye out for SkyCars' appearance in the gallery and/or the monthly newsletter.

I was informed by Hubdule that SkyCars was featured at SyncOn '03 and was well-appreciated. It then moved on to a large gaming convention in Germany with thousands of visitors and put onto 5000 demo discs handed out there.

Exciting stuff in my opinion!
