hey guys this is just a thread showing my progress on my entry into the contest. I havent fiqured out a name yet but i have thought up a idea for a story.

Your a CSI agent and you are investgating a murder (havent fiqured out were it takes place but i know that it is abandoned) will you are investagating a murder you find things that are strongly related to other murders that have been happening in the area and find that this isnt just another murder but somthing much bigger and that it might not be just one person in these murders.

this story is completly W.I.P thats just what i have been thinking for a story.

These levels that i will be making for this contest I will take bits and pieces of these levels or the whole level in my game that im currently making The Dead Lives.

Looking great so far man, the lighting is nice, the segments look really cool, and the entity placement is very good!

Good luck in the competition

Looks very good concerning the entity placement. About the lighting,i'm guessing a little more power wouldn't be that bad. But that's only my opinion.

Good luck.

I think the lights should be a little stronger. Remember that horror games don't need to be completely dark. Remember the first F.E.A.R.? It had plenty of bright spots.

Other then that, it looks good.

Pretty good overall, but you've over-used the the ww2 wall light. Rextexture it, make the lights brighter, add an illumination shader to it, etc.

yeah i wish i could find other lights theres not really any other lights and yeah i forgot to put the illumantion on those and im not going to make the lights brighter because in the story your a CSI agent and you are at the crime scene and they only could turn on the lights up to that point in full power past that point the lights arnt as powered some of them couldnt even get turned on. So thats why the light arnt so bright

What do you mean by retexture them like what?

I'll give you a hint: Try lowering the amount of lights in a room; if you're trying to make a horror, you want as little lights as possible without making the player thinking they're blind. Also, try different light colours and sizes . Just some hints to try and beat me or CoZ or anyone else. I've attached a pic of what a horror should have in terms of lighting.

...It's just an example of how lighting can be used to achieve a sense of horror BM, I'm not trying to say I';m the best at game design, neither am I trying to say that this game is bad (It's great btw). I've done research on asylums and TBH that screen is the closest I could get to getting the feel of an asylum. All I'm saying is that perhaps some different lighting techniques could be integrated like flickering lights and fallen lights . Not causing any offense to anyone...

hey ok i already changed some lights and do you get that thats not the feel i want to give the player i dont want it to be bright and have big powerful lights I want it to look gritty and its been abandoned for a while.

oh and SSG thanks for the help but there is differnt color lights with different sources i dont want to have one light thats white and the other thats orange and coming for basically 2 light sources that are the same model. I do have flicking lights in this. Thanks for your help though and Good luck

Thanks everyone for the help i've been adding different lights in this and trying to change the light colors a bit. I'm thinking i might just re-start this part of the level im not really liking it.

Looking good, beachard. The light's not too white, but not too orange (or yellow).

@SSG: I've been meaning to ask, whats the first game in you gamer card? The one to the left of CoD:4?

@CS20,

It's the game of all evil that broke my Xbox: F.E.A.R. Files. Shame I can't get on Halo 2, I would be playing that on LIVE .

@beachard5: By retexture, I meant like change the yellow to a white-ish color or something to go along with the light color. I'd give my white rexture but I haven't changed it enough to distribute it.

@arenas you can see yes its dark but its suppose to be its abandoned and when you are investagating the scene they only got the lights on up to the point were the guy was killed then they couldnt get all the lights on full power or at all.

that is why it is dark but not dark enough you cant see anything.

@everyone

okay can we get back with C&C please

Why do people always think that horror goes with dark + dark + dark. Really i stoped watching your video at 00:10 seconds. It is to dark, and not very new. Thought the use of entities is nice. Segments are also cool. But a horror game can be alot more scarier with ambience set 200 or something. Anybody watched 1408? well... How about a fpsc version of it. Not difficult if you ask me. All the effects they have there you can have in fpsc. But about your video. I didnt heared many sound effects. None actually. And i just saw some lights. But the screens are good and story is not bad. But you want to place the light in front of the light source and not below it. And add a effect on those lamps. Other then that, looks good. Just think about this two things:
- a game can be scary as hell(believe me) if there is full lights on with ofcourse some dam nice light effects. + some awesome game and audio effects, 1408 is nice refference
- every single object in a game has a function, a reason being there.

EDIT: @sika sina games: from your words your are very good, arent you?, btw: i dont see very nice light effects on that screen.

thanks redeye. that video is kinda old though thats why its a little darker I have added alot more lights to that level and gave some more "power" and the screenies had quick lightmapping on them exept for the last 3 or so.

Now remember why i have it so dark. its because you are investagating a crime and they only get the lights up to that point with full power and most of the lights on after that point they couldnt get all thoughs lights on and in full power. Its not as dark as you think trust me. But thats my reason for it being dark.

thanks for the help

Here's a rule copied right out of the contest thread:

Quote: "- Games must be 100% your own creations"

So, I guess you're entry is invalid, unless your going to remove the "Penumbra Black Plague" Textures.

Anyway, it's still pretty decent.

@GOH Doomster: Here's a quote from The Next, on that same page.
