This will be good news for those of you who remember (and liked) Guitar Villian!
Yes, Guitar villain is back, under the new name (for now) Guitar Vigilante! Guitar Vigilante is a customizable rhythm game very much like guitar hero. However, there are two key differences;
1) You can load in your own sound files and actually play them.
2) There is a story mode in which you explore the town, look for gigs and better band equipment. (This is still in development)

In order to play your own original songs, you need to follow these steps:
1) Create your music file
2) Create a .TXT file containing the notes of your song, as described in the "Note_definitions.txt" in the main folder.
3) Load the .TXT file into the game. (Disabled in the demo)
4) Load your music file into the game. (Also disabled in demo)
5) Play your song!
6) ???
7) Profit!

You can play using either your computer keyboard or an XBox Guitar Hero X-plorer game controller. For the keyboard, the controls are as follows:
"1" key - Green fret
"2" key - Red fret
"3" key - Yellow fret
"4" key - Blue fret
"5" key - Orange fret
Space bar - Strum

For the XBox guitar controller, the controls are the same as Guitar Hero or Rock band.
A demo is attached.

Features:
= still to come
= Done
= Possibly to come

Keyboard controls
XBox guitar controller support
Ability to load and play original/custom songs (not included in demo)
Scoring system
Multiplier system
Rock meter system (fixed)
Wammy bar functionality
Story mode
Background imagery(band, crowd, etc)
In-game song creator
Drum support

Enjoy!
UPDATE: Fixed a big annoying bug in the scoring system.

Screenies:

I have a devious mind.

I don't know why, the fret buttons work but the strumbar doesn't. I tried space, shift, enter, control, alt.

hmm... odd. I just tried it, (downloaded the demo I uploaded just to be sure) and it works fine.
Kind of a silly question, but are you holding down the proper fret button when you hit space?
Actually, here's a little test:
in the beginning of the song, while the drums are playing and the guitar hasn't started yet, hit the space key. If your rock meter (the number after where it says "ROCK:") goes down, then the strumming is, in fact, working. If that is the case, you just need to work on your timing.

It's not going down. Must be some odd hardware incompatibility that hasn't shown up in any of my DB apps.

I can do One on Expert on GH3. Not well, but I can.

Hooked up my 360 controller, it works, but man is it sensitive. I hit maybe 1/5 notes because it's so picky.

quick question:
What OS are you using?
I just tested it on my XP machine and it does seem a little weird. I can only hit a few of the notes, no matter how good my timing.

XP SP3. You need more leeway on your notes; how big is the window currently?

the window is 800 X 600.
I think there may be some issues with it on XP. I can't even get my XP machine to detect the controller.
I'll work on giving the notes a longer timeframe to be hit.

I think by window he means the timing of the notes, as in Guitar Hero III and onward have a very large timing window giving you more leeway when hitting notes where as Guitar Hero II and Rock Band have a much stricter window of opportunity to hit the notes.

ah, ok.
The notes are 12 units long, and the window top hit the notes is approximately 20 units.

UPDATE!
I just fixed a bug in the scoring subroutine which caused the rock meter to go down right before you got to a new note, even if you hit the note, but still allowed you to increase the meter upon hitting the note.
I also gave more leeway for hitting the notes, game plays much better now.

Nice I like "You SUCK". I couldn't even hit a note (space bar doesnt strum or anything). Make the hit window up a bit, because you hit the note JUST BEFORE, not actually on the note (well, you can but usually you dont).

EDIT: I plugged my xbox 360 wireless receiver in and connected my GH guitar, but it doesn't work (says it isnt detected)

I think it might just be the actual 360 controller. Unless it is otherwise.

I found it very difficult with the keyboard, though I didn't get the chance to play it with a guitar.

Really? What OS are you using? I haven't tested this on XP yet.
Quote: "I plugged my xbox 360 wireless receiver in and connected my GH guitar, but it doesn't work (says it isnt detected)"

As of now, it only supports the Xbox guitar hero X-plorer controller.

The reason for this is that I use the "perform checklist for control devices" command, and then check if any of the name values in the checklist are "Guitar Hero X-plorer (Controller)". Only that exact controller works right now.
Quote: "I think it might just be the actual 360 controller"

pretty much, yeah.
if you want to help, plug any different models of Xbox GH controllers into your PC and run the attached .exe. that will give you the exact name of the controller, and I'll add that into the code so you can use it.

Perhaps you should use a heuristic and try any gamepad with "Guitar" in the name?

Change the Space Bar to the Backspace button.

So what happens is to play right-handedly you just flip the keyboard so the bottom is resting on your stomach.

Left-handed you just rotate it 180 degrees, so the back is on your stomach. And so you are holding it as if a guitar.
Also if I get Blenders .x exporter working, I have made a guitar and amp, sure they are DS quality but they will save frame-rate.

Or the shiftkey. The shiftkey's easier to use with Mac keyboards (not that I have one, talking from past experience) because the backspace key is a bit twitchy at times.

If you want a guitar model, I have one I designed and modelled myself. It's intended for Fallout3 but it's in 3DS so DB can load it.

Oh yeah here is my model guitar, it isn't meant to be high-res but hey, it'll save alot of frame rate.

finding "guitar" in the name won't work because my wireless one comes up as "Controller (Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows)"

Perhaps, then, it would be better if a menu were to come up listing all of the controllers and have the player select the correct one?

That'll come in eventually. But because this is the demo, and I only had the X-plorer to test with, I made it so I knew it would work with that controller. (Rather than leaving it up to chance that someone's controller would work right or not.)

I play guitar hero a lot. I know what I meann when I say, you need to make Hammer-ons and Pull-offs. They make the game a lot more interesting.

Enjoy me, I am JDmino.

This is my little attempt at a full-keyboard Guitar Hero clone written in Flash during lunchtimes at college. It doesn't really work; no strumming, score or rock meter, but the text in the bottom left corner displays "fail" if you aren't hitting a fret, "superfail" if you're hitting one you shouldn't and "good" if your keypresses match.

http://starsofphaton.110mb.com/guitarherobeta/guitarherocs3.html

It was intended to play songs from XML files. This is the one included with my little swf: Linky

I abandoned it because it's fairly unplayable.

Have a go.

Are you using the keyboard or a guitar peripheral?
Just wanted to let everyone know that work IS still being done on this, even if I haven't posted here recently. I'll have an updated demo up as soon as I can.

I have a devious mind.

That's funny, quite a few people are complaining that it's unplayably difficult due to its short note window.
