Install correct versions of MSVC++ Express and DirectX first. Install DarkGDK and work through the included tutorials which should be in the drop down list of your start button. Then work through the 6 tutorials for Space Invaders which the links for those are in the Dark GDK forum.

Note: IMO, Make sure you know C++. The better you know it the less time you will spend on the learning curve.

You know for a fact that you have reached the edge when you can absolutely see sound!

There is a tutorial in the Dark GDK installation which shows how to load and animate a 3D model. It's very basic but at least it gets you started. There are also one or two 3D samples in the "samples" directory, like the "huge dungeons" and "camera" source codes. The Space Invaders is a 2D tutorial, but it's good for showing how to structure a game. For further progress, it's best to look through the available 3D commands in the Dark GDK help and experiment.
