Use this thread to post your best tips for 3d modelling to benefeit other modellers.

My tip : Optimise polygons that are not required to flex in a deformable mesh into squares (such as polygons in the head), while flexible polygons should be triangular.

Modeling For Animation:The worst enemy of the Smooth shader AND the Subdivision Surfaces are little triangles placed in animatable area,if you really need to put one tri there, make it bigger so the deforming plane keep it's integrity.

Avoid 5 verticed Faces, their geometry will cause visual flaws in your animations.

Finish the modeling/crafting before ANY .X Export/Import,use .Obj or .3Ds instead to keep the maximum options retained.

Get some reference pictures from http://www.fineart.sk But DON'T only rely on the side and Front view since the orthographic FOV differs form the one on your pictures to allow 'Head-On' editing so make most of the 'Vertex Tweaking' in the 3D viewport.

If this post gets sticky I'll add more, but I don't feel like repeating myself, been doing that for 4 years around this place

Lower Polycount in Wings3D Tips:

1:Instead of using spheres, use a smoothed Dodecahedron
Polycount difference:
Sphere 128 Polygons in Editor
Smoothed Dodecahedron 60 Polygons

2:Alter you cubes to look a little bit more like cylinders
Select one of the 4 top edges and its adjectent edge on the bottom and select cut 2. Connect those two, and repeat with the edges on the opposite side. You can then move those edges to make the cube look more like a cylinder, though a little more clunky, it works just the same if you have a good enough texture.
Polycount Difference:
Cylinder 18 Polygons in Editor
Cube 8 Polygons in Editor

3: Never smooth, ever!
Polycount Difference:
NotSmoothed 100 Percent
Smoothed 300% of original Polycount

4: Its really ok to have your models look kinda chunky. With the right texture and right lighting, your chunky model will look just as good as a smooth one.
Polycount Difference:
Chunky Model Low Poly
Smooth Model High Poly

Almost all modeling programs have mirror options. So if your building a car, person, tree... you only have to edit one side then the other will automatically change . This might seem obvious, though its extremely useful and can save a lot of time .

Never, ever use a mesh smoother on the whole model, rarely should it be used on a single part. Why, well for one it make a decent model look like a balloon animal. A good texture well fix almost anthing, so dont sweat the blocky edges.

I can't agree with you on that. You may need to smooth out a square into a sphere, or in certain cases, smooth out a design. Smoothing can help save time in programs, if you know how to do it.

As for my tip

1.) If you're just modeling a scene, do not neglect lighting effects.

2.) Practice. Well whatta you know. No one has mentioned the biggest modeling tip of all.

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.

Make sure that the model/s normals are facing the right way. (normally outwards). Some programs flip the normals inside out when you mirror geometry.

NWC Omega:A smoothed Cube is even better

Arrow:I don't agree,if you smooth polygons,smooth them all.

Not sticky yet??Well thanks alot HarpieGamer

Ive seen quite a few good models ruined by foolhardy use of an auto-smooth tool, ah wait, sorry, I ment to say Auto-smooth tool in my earlier post.

Drive space is cheap. Save often and save sequentially (ie. golem1, golem2, golem3, etc.) This way you can experiment without fear. Not all undo commands are equal.
