I believe I had directx 9 installed as well as directx 10, however when I tried to re-download from the compatibility thread, the installer gave me an error. Please help...

try uninstaling first what you have actually and install again.

I got an error the first time I tried to install 9. I tried it again and it worked fine. No idea why.
